They should've added pipestem to the list of winter kill lakes. I saw quite a few dead ones in there this winter. Even drilled through one with the auger.

Drayton is approx. 50 miles north of Grand Forks on the interstate. It's a pretty small town. You will want to take the Drayton exit off of the interstate & head east...you will be on the north side of town. At the gas station you will want to take the hwy. & head north, out of town for a couple of miles. There is a road that goes east again that will take you to the boat ramp/dam. There is a sign there, but it come up fast so be looking for it. The dam there is smiliar to the one at the north landing at GF. I have had the most luck right below the dam, but lots of people also go down river & have good luck too. Catchabiggun!!!

Hey MnSportsFan, thanks for the info! I work in CES/utilities, how 'bout yourself? Anyway, I might check out Lincoln Park and/or across from the Moose on Friday....figure since it's my first time fishing the Red I might as well start anywhere I can get to. Will probably go to Devil's Lake on Sat. and have heard that Black Tiger Bay is a pretty good spot so just might have to check it out. Again, thanks for the info and if you have anything to share on other places I am all ears.

Good luck!

Hey J-Dub, you on the base? If so where do you work? If you try behind cabelas or any one of the many local parks in town they have pretty good shore fishing spots on the red. I am going to try and get out this weekend. The bite is starting to pick up I hear. Talk to ya later.

Hello all, am just starting to get back into the fishing scene (been over seas far too long!) and would like some info on some lakes/dams around the G.F. area. Was out at the coulees last weekend and had some luck but nothing to write home about. Drove up to Homme Dam, Whitman, and Matejzeck Dam.....any info on these areas would be greatly appreciated. Also would like to find a fairly easy access site to fish on the Red. Thanks for any info.

Have to tell you all about a terrific time I had last night! I have drawn turkey tags before, but this year is one I'll never forget. Saturday the 17th I tried a spot I wasn't familiar with. I drew my tag for unit 27 McKinzie county. For the sake of keeping this place to myself, since good public hunting areas are becoming short in supply Ill say it was a place right out a hunters paradise novel. Anyway, on the 17th I left Parshall about 9:00am and was worried I had missed a good morning hunt for a sleep in. But I was seeing Turkeys with an hour and the first 3 I saw, I put the sneak on, and much to my own blame I choked. (bought a box of 3inch mag 6 shot, the box said turkey loads, but me being a much smarter hunter has learned otherwise)Second group of turks was the same thing, I pulled a beautiful sneak, got within 40 yards and the SAME RESULTS! 3 shots, a ruffle of the feathers, and GONE. Very ticked off, I proceded to go home because if any of you are formiliar with that day april 17th, it snowed and rained in my county, so I was soaked. Reliving the hunt all the way home I remember my fathers words about turks, double Odd buck! I had 1 shell and never even put it in my gun. I probably would have scored. Last night a friend of mine and I (one that drew for the same unit) took off from work after track practice and I said I wanted to go to the same area. Within 45minutes we were on the sneak on some premo land. A beautiful draw with a stubble field bordering it, and we spotted the turks running in and out to feed and present. Well, they were located in a low spot and on the other side of a round shaped butte, sort of. I ask my partner which side he wanted and he said he wanted the side with the wind, we had an incredibly easy walk to the hill and then the sneak was on, I told him whoever has a good shot take it, he agreed. I crawled for about 20 yards and lifted slowly, I saw 2 hens in the trees resting and 1 bird out in the open presenting. Well, 00buck as my first shot and 3inch BB for my second and 3rd I pulled up and sqeezed off. Tommy was hit well, but headed for the trees when he got another load, and he was still looking to get away when he recieve anther load. I couldn't believe how tough these creatures are! After the 3rd round he laid down about 10 yards into the draw and I came on him and finished him off. I really feel I worked hard for this Tom. 3 sneaks and approximately 400 yards of crawling finally yielded me my game. Im going to try and put my pictures on this site, I hope all the 2004 hunters have the same feeling I had last night, one of success! good luck and what a rush. Oh, the beard was 8 inches and he was around 19lbs

Hi all,

Me and some friends from work are planing a prairie dog trip in June and are looking for some dog towns in the area south of Mandan. We are all residents and avid sportsman. We have a few places to hunt but are looking for more just incase our spots are all shot up. Private land would be best but we are open to anything anyone is willing to offer.

Thanks for your time,

Mike

"NEW" Season is OH SO CLOSE!

The Red River is in the best shape for the spring opener than I've seen in a few years! This only spells one thing, "tons of cooperative kitties"! Currently the Red here in Lockport is still runing 7 to 8 feet above normal and there's still an over abundance of flow which is very favorable for attracting "BIG" hungry cats in from Lake Winnipeg in search of food! By the time the seasom offically gets underway on May 15th, the river will be in absolutely incredible shape, teaming with frenzy feeding cats!

I was just curious? Can anyone tell me whether or not Cabella's in East Grand Forks is carring the Frabil small mesh net? Frabil actually refer's the net as their "halibut", but realistically they could have easily have named it something like "WHISKER'S SUPREME" or something of that nature! In a nutshell, this small mesh is the by far the best landing net that I have ever personally fished with! The small mesh offers "TWO" very distinct advantages over the conventional large mesh net. First of all, the small mesh does not permit the fish too become entangled, this is a huge advantage, especially when the action is fast and furious! Secondly and equally as important, your lead sinker can by no means become entangled in the finer mesh! Any of you that has logged enough hours pusuing Ol' Whiskers can attest to just how frustrating it is wasting precious and productive fishing time untangling your lead from the mesh. The small mesh totally eliminates this problem and how important is that!

So if someone would be so kind as to research whether or not these nets are available in the G.F's area, I would very greatful for an update!

Danny,

It seems that you're out of luck. We went through the same thing and just get together once a year and pour about 500 of them. It is cheaper and it gets us by. The only other suggestion is to look on the internet. You will be spending a fortune but you will get your sinkers.

sorry I couldn't be of more help.

ND doesn't have too many prarie dogs anymore. Ranchers have done away with most. I know of a couple spots, but giving the directions would be impossible. The only places you are going to find them is way off the beatin trail. Some farmers will let you hunt if you can find them.

Mike:

There are a number things that you may need to be aware of. As a Non-Resident, you would be required to purchase a General Small Game License and a Non-Resident Furbear License. The prices would be $25 and $85 respectfully.

An Outfitter for prairie dogs in North Dakota is really unnecessary. You may want to contact the ND Game & Fish to obtain a good topographic map to familiarize yourself with ND terrain. The further west that you travel, the better your chances are of bagging your limit . Area's with higher acreage of prairie should be your focus. Pretty much just get off the main highway's and find any local farmstead. Even though the property will more than likely be posted, most farmers/ranchers will welcome your intentions.

From Sheridan you will need to travel realistically about 900 miles to find good prairie dogs. If your committed to a 500 mile drive, that would place you around the St. Cloud Minnesota area. That area should be good for prairie dogs also. Presuming that you'll be using .22 caliburs, you may want to consider scheduling a trip sometime during June/July. Bring along a couple extra boxes of .22 bird shot incase you fill your limit on prairie dogs. You wouldn't want to miss out on a Minnesota Big Game mosquito hunt. One will usually make a meal for 2.

Have you thought about "Vector Control" and mosquito sprays toxicity to the Red River? I did some math. The amount of pesticide in 1 minute of spraying, can make 781,250,000 Gallons of water poison to fish!

(vector control

"Resmethrin (making up 18% )" 0.18 x 8.0 fl/oz per minute 0.18 x 8.0 fl/oz =1.44fl/oz per minute.

The 96-hour LC50 values for Scourge in rainbow trout, Bluegill Sunfish, and Sheepshead minnow are: 2.40 ppb, 13.00 ppb, and 8.80 ppb, respectively.

13 parts per billion is the highest concentration toleraterated by fish. At 14.4 part per billion diluted in water = 1.44oz Resmethrin / 100,000,000,000oz water.

781,250,000 Gallons water potentialy toxic PER Minute!!!

look at the spray area compared to the river.
