Stump Lake Fishing Reports:

Ice Fishing Stump Lake. If the perch aren't biting on Devil's Lake...Stump is a good second choice..

The locals have asked that Stump Lake be kept a secret...but if you found this page you were looking for an alternative to Devils Lake ice fishing anyway! (I'm not quite sure the businesses in Lakota share the feeling the locals do, either.)

Below are fishing reports for Stump Lake...be sure to visit the links at the right for other lakes and rivers in North Dakota!

I have'nt fished Stump lake as of yet, I see some lousy reports about it, I originally came from Wisconsin, we find that the fish are like people, They eat every day so if you are not catching fish it may not be the fish's fault.

It may be the fishermans fault, Makes sense to me?

Good fishing cry baby?

Hit Stump the last week for ducks...pounded the greenheads on the west side. Noticed several rising fish in a shallow backwater area..knowing that there are no trout in the lake I deduced that they must be walleyes or perch feeding on surface scuds. Anyway, I returned with a rod the next day and casted bead-headed nymphs to pick up 10 average sized perch. Pretty neat.

Don, Have you tried fishing the canal from Blackswan to East Devils? I have recently been stacking the 'Eyes out of my canoe. A jig/minnow or jig/shrimp combination seems to be the ticket. They are really shallow right now, it's like casting for pike. I don't know how long they will be in there, but it's hot right now. I have yet to see another fisherman!

Your talking about the ditch directly off of #4, correct? This is where I've gotten a few in the past couple of days. Arched back? I've never heard of it...maybe he got wrapped around something in the current. Shrimp still seem to work the best.

Stan, The key is the stinger hook for keeping your cisco or smelt horizontal. We will use a norweigen j hook with a stinger hook; hook the smelt from head to tail with the stinger holding up the tail. I found the new ice buster casting bobber works well. i place it about 4ft. under the surface; and hold on tight. I have also used the shrimp stink bait for chumming before i throw the line in. I caught a #6 pike with an arched back, does anyone know what this is?

Just a comment about Stump Lake...I have to disagree with the comments stating that this lake is fished out. That is hardly the case but I will agree that the bite here is tough to come by. Numerous times I have been on this lake in the past year or so and have had some decent luck with the perch. It seems during the early ice fishing season it works the best and then they simply shut off for the rest of the season. This lake I feel is only just starting to be something special. Walleyes have been put into this lake and only time will tell how they grow. I know this fact for the stocking reports by this state and seeing one on the camera. This is all backed up by a uncle of mine actually catching one in December. Sure this lake is tough but when its on, its on and producing a ton of fun.

Doug,

Over the past few years perch fishing has exploded. People limiting out on some very nice size jumbo perch. Also, walleye and Northern pike are starting to appear. This is from the overflow at Devils Lake.

There still aren't any resorts at the lake, nor any real services within 10 miles, but look for that to start to change as more and more people start to find this hidden gem.

Winter icefishing is the most popular, but summer fishing is starting to ramp up and if they ever get some decent boat launches/ramps going, you can expect to see more and more family outings.

It's a very beautiful lake...and it is starting to come into it's own.

I've not been to Stump Lake since the mid-70s. We used to camp at a Boy Scout cabin on the S.E. corner of the lake. It was a dead lake at that time....very alkaline. At the time there was a resort in the same area we used to hike through but it was deserted, as the lake had "died", supposedly. There were reports that the Garrison Diversion project was perhaps going to come through Stump and liven it up. Can someone tell me what has happened in the past few decades to bring life back to a really great place? Thanks, to whomever feels like they want to cue me in. -db-

Fished on Sunday Dec. 15th with Ev "I'm not marking anything how 'bout you"? We started south of county 4 and on the east shore. We(I) gassed our minnows on the way out so thanks to the sportsman from Munich who shared some with us. We were in 12-26 feet of water, up and down the shoreline-nothing. No markings, some other folks caught 3, 8 inch walleyes in deeper water, that was it. Heard a report of some guys "last weekend" who one day couldn't keep them off their lines and the next day, not a single bite. I wonder if the "Jinx" fished this area this fall or sat in my rig as I got bait? Any leads?

Went to Stump on Saturday from 11:15 - 2:00 pm. Fished just S/SW of cty rd #4. Started out in 28 ft of water on the N side of the "group". Caught nothing, saw at least one fish taken within the bigger group of fishermen, but I worked my way towards the north shore and although I had a couple fish show up on the vexilar, they swam right on by without being interested in my offering.

Stump Guide Breyer, Awwww, I knew I should have tried it there! I had driven down to the water on CR #4 and didn't want to disturb the mallards (that and the wind was howling in on the shoreline). So I didn't even toss a line in that direction. I haven't been out that way for a week now, but I would imagine that most of the ducks and geese are gone by now. Most of the several thousand ducks that were on Stump that day were the northern mallards mixed with a few scaup. Be careful testing that ice, I went through about 25 years ago as a stupid young kid on Sakakawea and still consider myself lucky to have made it out.

Allen,

Sorry to hear that you didn't get into the perch on Sunday. I was out on Saturday and did quite well just south of No. 4 on the east side. There are some bullrushes and assorted patches of aquatic vegetation that provide enough cover to attract the nice tiger fish.

Are there still ducks around Hamar? I would think that the corn fields should be HOT right now. I was walking on some of the sloughs around Petersburg.....they have 4-5 inches of ice in some spots. Not ready yet but it won't be long!

Stump Guide Breyer, I was out at Stump this past Sunday. Was actually working over by Hamar, anywho, I had a couple hours to spare and tried to do a little shorefishing. Only tried in the park by the boat ramp. Nothing, I don't think I could get the lightweight stuff out deep enough. I did however, see thousands of ducks and geese. Amazing birds. They say the fishing pole and stuck around when i casted within 30 ft of them. If I ever decide to take up duck hunting again, my camo will be as a fisherman.

Dropped the boat in near Spoonbill and trolled around the corner to the SE, the fishing was terrible! The first time that I 've been out there and not gotten a bite. Saw very little waterfowl to speak of. Not a whole lot of ice yet but it's coming! The Perch fishing has gone straight downhill since the illegal pike introduction. The pike are even small!

You're right Allen, DL is spilling over into Stump. It was this spring anyway, now it is not much more than a trickle. I'm sure that eventually the pike will migrate over to feast on the perch. I was hoping to get a few more seasons before that happened. I was out again last night, filling my limit of nice fish. Shrimp and a slip bobber worked great next to my belly-boat. I never see anybody else out there in the summer, why is that?

Allen

Stump Guide,

Isn't the water occassionally spilling over into Stump from DL? If so, I'm sure Stump will get her fill of northerns relatively easily without the help of our friendly "sportsmen" who have a penchant for "knowing better" than the trained wildlife and fisheries biologists. I suspect as long as Stump continues to become less saline with the addition of rainwater and DL overflow, the northerns will survive and reproduce. However, as soon as the water starts going back down and becomes more saline, even the perch fishery will eventually fail to reproduce. Unless I am mistaken, yellow perch can tolerate more salinity with respect to reproduction.

I don't think that there are many Pike in Stump as of yet, although I've heard mixed reports. I've heard of some illegal stocking by some Minnesotan's. I hope that this is not the truth. I've been piling up some nice perch in the spoonbill pass areas this past week. Can anybody point out areas where there might be some geese? I can't see any.

Hmmm, I think it's a shame that the northerns are gaining ground in Stump. The area has quite a few areas to chase northerns and small perch around already. Now don't get me wrong because I enjoy catching pike, but DL as a perch fishery is overrated in my book and Stump was just appearing to come on real strong as a perch fishery. I believe the northerns will hurt the perch fishery so many of us already have grown to enjoy. Oh well, nothing can remain the same.

Dropped my John boat in on #4 and fished the shoreline to the south. Beetlespins tipped with shrimp were the ticket. I learned the shrimp trick from a guy last winter during an ice fishing event. Man do they like those shrimp! They double as a great snack when the fish decide not to bite. Not quite as good as a pork chop but good non-the-less. I saw a dead pike floating along the shoreline, this could be a good sign of things to come.
