Your e-mail request was forwarded to me for response. You asked the status of Hobart Lake and whether or not it was open to year round fishing. It is open to year round fishing. It is an easement refuge with the US Fish and Wildlife Service but language in the easement states that one of the purposes is to allow for fishing. I know there was some confusion in past years but it's since been discussed and dealt with. Thanks for your interest.

gone huntin, I am not so certain either if access with a boat is permitted or not. If you scroll down a ways, you will see a post I had made inserting a copy of an email I received from Terry Steinwand(Chief fisheries division)stating that Hobart IS OPEN to year around fishing. I should check with him regarding the boat issue.

IF I'am correct, you cannot fish Hobart after Ice off. Hobart is a waterfowl refuge, which means that you cannot put a boat on the lake at all. The only time you can fish the lake is off shore or on the ice in the winter after all the waterfowl has left the area. Correct me if I'am wrong?

That is an insult. Yah we need minnesotans to teach us how to fish, just like we need minnesotans to teach us how to hunt. What a joke!!  <rest of post snipped by webmaster>

<Reason=this is not the place for inflammatory remarks like that. You're on MY site 'talkin' smack...and that is just not going to happen. This website is for sharing of information about fishing and sharing information amongst fishermen. It is NOT a State vs. State website. We can discuss issues in a civil manner, even disagree. Hobart is pretty dwindled; you might catch 1 or 2 there but I would wait a couple years to see if it rebounds. Sanborn Lake off of ND 1 going alright. Tons of fish, mostly real tiny; I haven't caught a perch that small since a Minn. lake. Also have had decent luck at Heinrich Martin for perch and sunnies. There's not even suppose to be any perch out there, but we caught them. Dumb illegal dumping; like the sunnies weren't stunted before. Good Luck

If there was someone out there, I believe he was there illegally. Hobart is closed until December 10th because it is either considered a waterfowl refuge or rest area.

Ok, not to freak anyone out, or get anyone's hopes up. But a reliable source told me there was someone out on the 2-3" of ice that was on hobart last weekend catching perch. More balls than brains I'd guess, but heck, that's a testament to a die-hard (or wet and cold) ice fisherman. I don't think deer opener will allow any of us to icefish this weekend, as temps will be in the mid-40s with rain. But its a sign that maybe the hard water is just a couple weeks away.

I am getting very anxious to start jigging for those jumbos!!!!!I think I will have to set the house up in the garage and practice the jigging technique. LOL..I still have to achieve bagging my deer before i can ice fish though, I will be needing jerky and sausage while hard water fishing.

Fished Hobart this weekend, steady action on Saturday and Monday morning, size seems to be smaller, but still a fair share of keepers. Kept 25 keepers on Sat, and caught about 8 keepers on Mon, but released the latter. Great place to take a kid fishing, steady action, and no serious ice experience needed, drop a line, hit the bottom, and bring it up 6 inches, and BAM you're in business. There are less vehicles and less pressure on the ice. Some people were still driving, but I refrain from doing so when I can, and I did. The number of anglers on the lake has dropped as well.

Had excellent luck on Sat. 26th. We were one of the first ones on the lake and did'nt see the huge town on the east side of the lake. We just got the vex. out and started locating fish everywhere. We were in 13' of water right on the NE corner of the lake about 300 yards from the highway. Ended up catching aprx. 80 fish between the 2 of us and kept 20 all 10" and up. We could'nt even get our second lines in the water until about 10. All in all it was probably the best weekend out there. If there was anybody out there in that big town please write in. Interested to see how it was over there. Good Luck

Fished Hobart from 10:30am - 5:00pm in about 20 ft of water caught 40 to 50 perch. Kept 9 of the bigger ones. marked quite a lot. 6 year old caught his first fish. I think he really enjoyed himself on the ice. The bobber was busy every minute or two. It was the best Perch action I have enjoyed for quite sometime. Ice was in pretty good shape, somewhere between 16 and 18 inches. Quite a few people fishing today. Maybe try St. Marys Lake just south of Hobart tommorrow.

Ice condition very good on Hobart Ice should be 18-20 by weekend. My brother fished the lake Tues. he kept 1 for every 3 or 4 he caught. They say the south part of the lake which is south of the interstate has bigger fish. I don't know I have'nt been on that side yet this year. Fish close to the bottom, however every once and awhile I would spot one on the vex that would be 3-5 feet off the bottom and lift up the bait and catch it. Good luck and have a nice day.

Thinking about taking my 6 and 10 year old kids to Hobart on Saturday, January 19th, But worried what that warm temperatures did to the ice. Are people driving all over the lake. A little more cautious with kids and of-course their mother is very nervous about anybody driving on a lake. I fished and drove on Hobart January 6th and there was no problem them. Any info would be great!

Fishing has been steady on the Hobart lake. Every once in a while will catch a 13 incher. On average you will throw back 4 or 5 to every keeper you catch. Ice is in good shape and about 16-17 inches thick. Good luck and have a good day.
