The thing I would like to see the most is a catfish limit on the Red River. Either no cats over a certain size or only one per a year. If you do catch a big cat and want to keep it you would have to cut out something on you fishing lic. Something like Manitoba does with there walleyes. Then if it is cut off and you are caught with a large cat you are fined. What do you guys think about something like this.

Maybe the two teir system is an answer. Set the limits at a very manageable level for the average fisherperson. Example our regular in-state licence of $10 your limit would be 25 perch per day and 4 walleyes. If you wanted to catch more you would pay for more. Just a thought.

When you say you would fish even if the limit was zero, I think I would agree with that. I have only kept 1 catfish in about 20 outings(I wanted to see what catfish tasted like). I just love the getting out of my daily routine and catching some fish. Keeping a meal is secondary to me.

Brad,

Here's my 2 cents. If they lowered the limit to ZERO fish...I would still fish. Perhaps a 2-tier licensing system would be worthwhile?

In one tier...you can fish, but you cannot keep ANYTHING...or perhaps a only small amount. In the second tier..you buy an upgrade for a limited time...and only one species of fish...and you may harvest a 'fair' amount of those fish. Whether it may be 25 perch or so is up to the G&F to decide what is a sustainable population. It is thought provoking when you consider what the G&F could take in from out-of-state money...

I haven't given this TOO much thought, so I'm sure this is not feasible as it stands, but I wanted to point out that if the limit was zero fish...I'd still fish.

I was just floating around in the Fishing Buddy Fish N Talk (Old Site of course) and noticed some people talking about the state lowering the perch limits to 25. Does anyone know if this is going to happen or is this just a rumor.

I also noticed people saying that it isn't worth the time to drive to the lake if the limit is only 25. I really don't care if the limit is 10 as long as I get the chance to catch some fish. As far as I am concerned a day of fishing is better than a day of work anytime.

What do people think of this if it is true?

Scott,

I heard that Stump has about 11" of ice on right now. (Thursday) People are driving on it but I think if it were my vehicle I would wait.

Hey Scott, Hey its me again and i was talking with my brother about your sight and he also thinks once the words gets out u will take over fishingbuddy and they will come crying to you for help but anyways we decided living in bismarck and doing alot of fishing on the river and in backwater in the winter and it is one of the main water sources in ND that you should add a page for the Missourie river. And the backwater and water along the river is very unstable right now with the freeze on oahe it sends the ice alot and the water around it to be open was out yesterday and had to go through 20 yds of slush and very thin ice falling numerous times and was not worth it didnt catch a thing. Thanks Scott, Cory

Keep up the good work and you will find MY posts about cats on this channel (pun) next year. Keep up the good work and by the way have a Wonderful X-Mas and All the Best to U All in 2002.

Scott,

I'm not too surprised FB doesn't like you plugging your site on their page. They have gotten very commercial as of late, and seem to have a very unfriendly attitude to the general public. Unless you are for the commercialization of ND's outdoors, then they are your "Buddy".

I admit it, I still surf in their on a regular basis, mostly because they have more users/reports (for the time being).

Here's a report: English Coulee Diversion near Thompson. Fished Sunday from 3:30 to 4:30. Landed 60+ perch between 6 and 8 inches, 3.5 - 4 ft of water, used minnows, perch eye, bare chartreuse jig smelling of food. No pike, no bass, lots of sorting.

Hey guys, wax worms can be shipped direct for about 25 cents a dozen.....get together with your buddies and you could save a few bucks.

It looks as though you can get them prepackaged in quantities of 250, and they keep for about 3 weeks.

NJSimonson:

You have spoken well. I have been doing some very hard thinking about putting up a link to our legislators in ND on this page. In fact I was researching it this morning. As far as I know, every State Representative has an e-mail address. E-mail is quick, and it gets the message across. I think I'll put the link up in the next few days.

I'm not sure of the best way to format it so each fisherman can just click to e-mail all of them....but I'll try to think of a way.

If there's any programmers out there that could help me...speak up!

Thanks again NJ, and you too Brad: It was well written and needed to be said!

Im always keen on releasing big game fish. Where I come from, if I get a walleye over 18" she goes back, I care about the fishery that much when a fish of obvious reproductive maturity (18+") is caught, she is released, end of story. 14-18" is my keeper limit. For pike, what is the sense in keeping those big fish. 12 lbs is NO trophy, and the fresh meat of any pike from 2-32 lbs, pales in taste when compared to perch, walleye and crappie. I just can't imagine people keeping 12-20 lb northerns from channel A to eat. He's right, keep the little guys and let the big ones go back, they are the future, they've earned your respect by living as long as they have, let em run.

On the subject of perch limits, there is currently a petition circulating throughout ND to lower the perch limit to 25 per day statewide (from 50). This will prevent out-of-staters and ignorants from totally destroying perch populations and stunting the genepool in a single season. To get involved in outdoor regulations and to have your voice heard, contact your state representative or your local wildlife federation chapter.

All the best, harvest selectively, and keep your lines tight.

Scott, About your check list, did you remember to put down Gortex toilet paper? You never can be sure. Also remember to always wear a clean pair of Gortex underwear in case you are in a car accident. Someone has to agree with JC HEFF on the Gortex. A good looking smart young man like that must know something about something. G - man

This is my thought on Brad D Fishing Etiquette:

He is right about the larger fish and the over harvest of them. I seen it all summer on the river with the large catfish. Twenty to twentyfive pounder getting hauled up to cars. I asked a couple of them they said they were going to eat them. I guess the can't taste to good because the smaller ones are the ones to eat.

As far as keeping the large fish. If it is to mount and put on the wall you won't be eating it, so why not take a tape measure and measure the length and the girth of it and then PUT HER BACK. She is the one that is going to lay eggs so your kids can take there kids when there your age.

The Taxidermists have come along why over the years and they even know that keeping large fish hurts the ponds, lakes, and rivers, we fish. So take a tape measure and camara fishing and have a reproduction made.

You mention sharpening the ole auger blades, bring it on. I have not been very lucky lately.

I've only been on the ice one time this year. It was great though. 11-13 inch perch was the topic of the day on Darling. I got out a little late that day and the numbers weren't great, but the size was. Bait seemed to vary. Large minnows to waxies, minnow heads to tailless minnows. I used minnows small to large and when the fish were there it didn't seem to matter, they hit all sizes. Sounds like a snow storm this coming weekend with high winds, so maybe I can get back out there the next one. Good luck out there!

Is anybody out there interested in learning how to sharpen their ice auger blades?

If there is, I'll put up a page, with good photo's on it this weekend. Close-ups if necessary...how about some feedback on that?

I'm also working on a photoshoot for the equipment tips page...I need some time to clean out the garage....it will be more for beginners.

No matter what kind of ice fishing jacket you buy I have always been able to stay the warmest with something that went down past my butt. It is always nice to be able to bend over and keep your back covered.

Jim, there is a good chance that they will lose their horns around a heavily used feeding area. I had leftover sugarbeets in one of my fields and there were 5 deer antlers right next to the beets. They were paired also, a 2x2 and a 4x4. The last horn I wish would have had a pair to it, it had 6 points on it and very tall.

I am depressed, my daughter, who is 2 years, 3 months old used to read/look at fishing magazines while she was potty training. All of the sudden: she NOW wants her 'Barbie Dolls'.

HELP!

There is no excuse for this wretched plastic! "Barbies" aren't even good BAIT! I am convinced even the most ignorant Northern Pike will ignore this fair-skinned-polymer. But she thinks they are bathroom material....

I am considering writing a protest letter to the appropriate authorities for delivering such a deterrant to a universal pastime such as potty-training...but would MATTEL listen?

Does this 'company' understand the damage they are doing to our young females during such a critical time in our life? (Not the childs life, MINE!)

Barbies are not toilet material. PERIOD. Granted, Barbies are playground, daycare, 'night-night stuff' and plain old 'here, take this and go play' props, but TOILET TRAINING material? Mattel has some answering to do.

Does Mattel even HAVE a 'fisherwoman Barbie'? If they do, they don't advertise it. Maybe Mattel is using 'fisherwoman Barbie' as a write-off for taxes? Hmmm...? Maybe the IRS should know about this UNADVERTISED 'fisherwoman Barbie'...??

I'm SURE an audit of Mattel's records are in order. This unadvertised 'fisherwoman Barbie' is nothing more than a plot to undermine the naturally talented fisherwoman/toilet trained women out there.

Barbies don't even have BARBS! And yet they are 'hooking' all our young toilet-training females!

WELL....other fishermen fathers? What can we do about this insanity?

Boycott Mattel?

INSIST they release the 'fisherwoman Barbie' to the public?

Get the IRS to crawl all over them?

What can us fathers do?

I'm at a loss....:<(

Never made it to Matecjek today...instead drove to Lake Laretta. No-one on the lake. It's frozen over and several tire tracks on the gravel road leading up to the ice....then they turn around. There were 2 sets of footprints on the ice...they walked out about 10 feet...and then turned around. Their footprints looked very 'slushy' (is that even a word?)

I drove clear around the lake for the first time. I was alone and was not interested in checking ice thickness by myself. Forgot the ice/spud bar, forgot the GPS, (in case I found a hot spot), forgot the camera (to show you guys how the lake looks.)

The road around the lake is tough to navigate...I was a little worried I'd get stuck in the middle of nowhere, without a GPS...and alone. (Just goes to show how much a GPS can be of help if you ever get stuck. I had a cell-phone, but without the GPS...It felt useless.

I then drove to Niagra Dam, (never been there.) It's quite small, and no evidence of anyone on the dam. Drove on further to Larimore Dam...closed till ice fishing. Frozen over...but unknown ice thickness.

All-in-all...it was disappointing.

The snow on the lake is not good. Snow is an excellent insulator. My TROPICAL flower bulbs survived last winter under 3 feet of snow....almost unheard of in these parts, but typical under that much snow. I imagine that the ice is probably 3 or 4 inches thick...but I didn't dare venture out alone.

I WOULD BE WILLING to go out and test the ice thickness tomorrow (Sunday) on Lake Laretta ...if anyone is interested in going...e-mail me if you'd like to go...
