Fished the Red north of Selkirk on the 1st and again today. On the 1st fished from 2 til 4:30 and landed 5, nothing real big but two were in the 5 to 6 lb range and the other 3 in the 2 to 4 lb range. Today fished from 10 til 4PM and landed 7. The largest was 29 1/2" and would guess it weighed 10lbs the next 2 were 27" and one was 26". There were 3 of us in the shack and we lost 6 other fish. We are in the main channel (26') and fishing right off the bottom with double yellow tails tipped with minnows. The green backs are in so give them a try.

Don't have much time to relate everything, but things are really good on the Red (north). There is some vehicular traffic (nuts)but most good spots are accessible via quad/sled/foot etc. Jigs, minnows, and the classic structural elements are holding monsters right now....eg. 7 fish 7-13.5 # in one outing---GOOD. I'm off for whitefish tomorrow on another Manitoban lake. Happy holidays and best of luck with those greenbacks!

One of the first places to ice up on the Red around GF/EGF should be the slack water immediately below the Point (where the Red Lake flows into the Red). There's no current in the 20-30 feet or so of water straight downstream. It slopes to about 10-12 feet deep about 30 feet out. I had good luck there last winter on walleyes from 3:30 p.m to a bit past dark. Live minnow back-hooked on a glow jig under a bobber on one rod, jigging Rap or Northland rattle glow-spoon on other tipped with minnow or minnow head. I've since moved away, so I have no idea if there's any ice on the river, and river ice scares the crap out of me anyway, but check it out carefully. The backwater eddy that flows back up the side of the Red Lake from the Point has yielded walleyes too, as has the seam between the eddy and the main current just a few feet up from the Point. Be REALLY careful fishing the part of the Point out into the Red and just upstream in the Red from the Point itself. Persistent fast current makes the ice there chancy all year in some years. Fell through there once.

I made a post on fishing talk but will add another one so all avid pickerel (walleye) fishermen do not miss it. The GREENBACKS have arrived. Hitting from Lockport to Netley Creek on minnows just off of bottom. Several 10 to 14 lbers and heard of 2 16. The ice is 8" thick suitable for human traffic but I WOULD NOT drive out yet.

Jonathan,

I'm so sorry it has taken me this long to respond to you.

I tend to forget about this page....cause I don't ice fish the Red that often.

I have no idea of the ice thickness. I'm a little nervous fishing on rivers.

Keep asking here, maybe someone will answer. Your post on the 'hot topics' page is a good place to start to drum up some interest.

ANOTHER thing is YOU can be the reporter! If you are going out and catching fish....others will follow!

I just have a feeeling that this page is going to be slow this winter unless someone like you brings some life to it!

Good luck, and keep checking the hot topics page and the smaller lakes and rivers page...and don't be afraid to chime in!

Snapped two hooks on big ones to but never got them in. The 30lb. Spiderwire help up though. If you would like to know about my spot or my grandpas secret bait, me and jonman10@hotmail.com. Good luck fishin boys!

Hello is anyone out there. I'm thinking about tryen ice fishing in some of the holes I have found on the river over the last couple of years. Has anyone ever done this and if so what have they tried. Did you try behind snags, inside bends, in the eddies what. I have some great spots picked out and as soon as the river is safe, well lets put that another way since its never really safe. When the snowcats are using it I'll give it at least a couple of more weeks to feel safe. Since I have seen these guys drive over the open spots by the point bridge about 70mph. Be safe see you on the ice.

Well folks...Humor columnist Dave Barry is planning to visit us here in Grand Forks / Grand cities.

He wants to do some ice fishing on the Red River. Now, do you think he'll get in touch with ME for some tips?

NO, he won't. He'll get his tips from some guy who's idea of ice fishing is watching Grumpy Old Men in his garage....with the door open. (The same guy thinks an ice auger is a corkscrew for frozen wine...)

Do you think Dave Barry will want to fish on HIS yet-to-be-named boat landing? No. He'll drive down to the river in downtown East Grand Forks, 2 days before the Frosty Bobber ice fishing tournament and mess things up for me!

Oh, those big-time media guys with their private space shuttles, and football-field sized Winnebagos....they think they can waltz onto the ice and catch 'the BIG one'?

Good Luck, Mr. Dave Barry, good luck.

Good morning folks,

I would just like to say that I am a better fisherman than a deer hunter. Only 1 deer in 6 tries. I hoped to get the hunting thing done quick so I could get back to fishing.

Did anyone fish this weekend? If so howd you do?

Fished the Red from the bank on Saturday morning and this afternoon (Monday)caught a nice 'eater' walleye both days and the goldeye were hitting like crazy. I saved the goldeye for next summer...going into the freezer....for cutbait next summer for catfish.

Walleye were taking small suckers, live, and the goldeye were taking fatheads. I tended to put 3 fatheads on my floating jig (lindy rig style), and that seemed to do it for the goldeye. I suppose all the commotion from the fatheads brough in the goldeye...and although I lost 1 or 2 minnows to short bites...they were there, and the 2nd or 3rd one got the goldeye.

The Saturday walleye sure tasted good! Today's walleye goes to my uncle...

Put the boat in one more time, no one last time. Fished from noon til 4 PM and caught only 1 greenback, about 4 lbs. Fished at Sugar Island (Selkirk) and there were about about 20 other boats and saw only one other fish caught. The weather was warm but a strong south wind. At the dock everbody was relaying the same story, no fish. At least the weather was nice and one can't complain too much. It sure was hard to put the boat away. Ran the gasoline stablizer and extra oil in the tank today and even ran the motor dry. Tomorrow I will finish the job. Hope to see you all on the Red next spring for those cats.

Til then, take care.

Jim.

Well...

we went out with the boat this evening on the Red...VERY slow.

Fish were WHERE we thought they would be, but getting them to bite...hard.

1 sauger and a goldeye were all that were had.

The fish are stacking up by Riverside Dam....my fishfinder was showing a LOT of fish there. But we couldn't seem to hook into any.

We drove around a bit around the dam...they seem to have leveled the road out on the river, so no more surprises of depth changes. There is a very nice backwater eddy on the south side. but beware...EVERY line we put out got snagged. I think a bottom bouncer would be in order till some silt/clay fills in some of the deeper cracks and crevices. did I mention the fact that my fishfinder was full of fish on the screen?

I, for the first time, felt very secure fishing by the dam. The current is not that bad at all, even about 50 yards from the dam. Depth varied from 5 feet to 15 feet with sharp drop-offs.

I want to personally thank the city of Grand Forks for clearing the landing this morning! I counted seven vehicles going through while we were fishing. (This morning there was still 18" of snow at the top of the hill.) Thanks for taking time to open up the landing for us fishermen!

By tomorrow afternoon you should be able to walk on the banks and fish. We walked a little bit tonight, and there was a little bit of mud, but we were able to walk and fish from shore.

Anyway, Brad...and Kent...and others...go on down to the landing, this time of year is the best for those throphy walleyes we look for!

Well...I've put the boat away...sorta. It's in my garage and if the snow melts a little more....I'll be able to put it in the backyard.

Shorefishing is on tap for this weekend. Looking for a sister to my mount above my computer....

hey ken, thanx for the report. Didn't have much luck that weekend, but this past weekend I did fairly well. Went down to Turtle River St. Park. They just stocked it again with trout about 3 wks ago. Unlike last time they were pretty nice size. Caught a couple over 2#'S and one even reached 3# mark. Caught 8 others, and released them for next time. Made for one heck of a meal. This weekend I'm off for the eye's again. Good luck to all and tight lines.

Went out yesterday... my passengers landed 3 cats. All 5 lbs or less.

We lost a fish...snapped the 30lb test. It could have been a northern.

Action was slow. There was another boat on the river. THe wind made things tough. In all it was good to get out, but the fishing left much to be desired....like ice?

Tim, if your fishing from shore I would fish the little pools below the damn on the north end. Use the lightest jig you can use and make your presention as slow as possible. You might also try a slip bobber in the eddies. Start with about a foot or so then lenghten it a little bit each cast until you find the bottom. They will be in the slow water. Best of luck.

Skunked!

Had a couple of nibblers...but the rain and the cold and the fact that WE were hungry made us go in early.

I was glad to see another couple of fishermen out on the bank by the old 'fox farm', they caught a small cat....on their walleye rigs.

If you guys are reading this, How did you guys do?

After a lengthly absence from the river, I'm glad to report that I went out last night. Landed a 6 1/2, 4 1/2, and 10 lb'er on cutbait.

Only they weren't cats....the 6 and 4 were walleye and the 10 lb'er was a northern. That's right....the walleye and northerns are biting on cutbait....right here in Grand Forks.

I'm going out again, in a few minutes.

I will report back tonight.

I have always been an advocate for jigging and I don't mean dancing. Here is a little tip that I find very effective in jigging. I try and get the small salted minnows, take the jig you prefer or the flavour of the day, (yellow, green or bright pink) and squeeze the little lead barb they put on to hold the rubber tail on. Open the minnows mouth and slip the hook in the mouth just beyond the gills, pass the hook out the side of the minnow just behind the gills, then push this minnow on up the throat of the jig, turn the hook and pass it again through the side as far back on the minnow as possible. Next take a second minnow and turn it upside down and hook it near the tail in the meaty portion of the tail. Doing this helps keep the first minnow on and I have no idea why but he sure increases the hook ups. Monday morning fished for 2 hrs and after about 50 saugers finally hooked a greenback, (25 1/2"). When I thought the minnow was large enough and only used a single minnow, no luck, as soon as I switched back to the two had a hit. As Dan says pick a proven spot and stick to it the greenbacks are travelling and let they come to you, be patient. Give it a try and good luck.

The Red was very good this past weekend. We caught many fish on all three days (didn't see that many others with/catching many fish)-- I was Wearing my Trilene hat...easy to spot--. Fall walleye requires PERSISTENCE.... and in my opinion I saw too many anglers cruising rather than fishing..... I was easy to spot jigging in the early am and late pm and trolling throughout the day. One trick I'm going to let out is that the jigging thing will start to predominate as the water temps keep going down and when trolling work up and down contours until you find clouds of baitfish or chomping 'eyes. I did take fish this weekend as I hadn't had a good walleye feed for a while and dagnamit they were good!

Fished the Red for greenbacks today. Fed 2 1/2 buckets of salted minnows to the sauger in the morning with only 2 greenbacks, a 25 and 24 1/2". The saugers were were alittle slower in the afternoon only 2 tubs but 4 more greenbacks, between 20 and 24". Nothing real big but interesting. It is slow but hopefully it will pick up. Fished the trolly line and the flats by the apt blocks at Selkirk. Heard of a few 10 to 12 lber caught but never saw them. Maybe the scales were stretched.
