Blaine,

Pike fishing is hit and miss around Grand Forks. Most folks don't target Northern Pike, however they are there. And they're big.

Try Riverside dam for open water this time of year. I've heard they have the long rods out already there...

March is starting to pay off.Sat.16th. started slow as it has been, about 9:30am first fish about a pound. Fish number 2 about 2lb. Number 3 , 9Lb. greenback Red River Walleye!!!Two more between 1 and 3lb. then we droped the big one. Everything on green 3/8 jigs.Rattlers'Salted shinners(the Baithouse brand) and it had to be moving. The strech of water we worked was the south end of Sugar Island, about 17ft. We didn't see any other fish, but I think it's a matter of putting in your time. The clock is ticken, If you want some WallHangers get out there!!!! March 31 is comming up fast. Later, Carl

OK Scott, Kolby and I are in #82 Right where I want to be half way into the pack. Since my boat won't win any races I get to leave in the middle both days. See you on the river. Come on snow melt already.

Yup I'd have to agree with C&J's last report on the Red --- it has been slow. Sauger have been picking up a bit of late, especially closer to the dam. Walleye have been sporadic and I suspect they won't be turning on to any great extent before the season closes March 31st. Ice shacks will be moved off the river by the end of the week as our Natural resources dept. asks Manitoban anglers to remove all shacks by the 15th. I wonder if the rising rainbow smelt population in the big lake has had an effect on the number and size of walleye we have seen in the Red this winter? I guess we'll be waiting for the opener this year (May 11) to get back at those "wiskered walleye" -- cats (as Dan Gapen used to say). Tight lines, Dan

Just to let everyone know I'm real happy to be linked up to your web.

The icefishing this year on the Red was off to a great start but slow finish. The last couple of months have been pretty slow for the greenbacks, not that there hasn't been some good days, but a lot more slow. If we ever get a break in the weather maybe things will pick up ( March 31st is our last day of fishing ). Pike fishing we didn't do any great numbers, but some real good sizes (quite a few in the high teens and low twenties ), Most on sardines or tullibee. Anyone needing any information on the area up here feel free to contact me. Tight Lines, Carl S. Loutit P.S. A special thanks to Brad Dokken for all your help.

Pike badger,

Below is North of the Dam. The English Coulee dumps into the Red about 1/2 mile North of the Dam.

Blaine-

I've caught Northerns on the Red- check the photo galleries. Both shore fishing and boat fishing.

Kent or anyone else,

Would "below" the dam mean north of the dam or south? Does the English Coulee come into the Red north or south of the dam?

Blaine, The Red River isn't really known for Northern Fishing. Its the Channel Cats that bring everyone here the pike are just a bonus. In my years of fishing on the red I have yet to catch one, but if its cats your after I know I can help there. I couldn't even tell you where to start for pike, below the damn would be a good bet, as far a the rest of the river I have no clue.

I fished north of Grand Forks on sunday were the english coluee comes into the red. I caught some nice norhterns but no walleys. The water level was a little low so it was hard to find were some deeper water was off of the sand bar. The ice was about 1/1/2FT thick. It was plenty thick but it crack like i have never heard ice crack before. Good luck if you try it!!!

Just responding to Kent's letter. If you are planning a catfishing trip I would strongly recommend you contact Stu Mckay at Cats on the Red in Lockport Manitoba. Went there for the first time last year in May and had a awesome time. We caught 64 cats in 3 1/2 days of fishing. We had 8 fish that were 36 inches. and only 2 cats under 26 inches. We are going back again this year and probably many years to come. I have one recommendation though, if you go, bring 7-12 dozen large sucker minnows with(dead of course, no live bait into Canada). Fishing for goldeye for bait can be time consuming and not always worth it. We tried both baits and had much better success using suckers.

Scott, Not sure if I'm getting in or not time will tell. As far as fishing went to the North Dame yesterday fro a couple of hours casting plugs and jigs with twister tails. Got skunked but had a good time, water was real clear. Lost two plugs and six jigs. Then I called it quites. Going to keep tryen for a nice spring walleye the should be getting ready to move pretty soon, just hope the water levels stay down it would help.

not to be anoying, I just posted this on your other river discussion forum.

when could we expect the peak time for catching a trophy cat from the red. me and a few fellow catfishermen are trying to plan a hard core trip. can we also camp on the bank. or is there a recomended motel. also what streach is best. we are mainly catch and release we might take a couple of small fillets. some people have told me mid may is best behind the dam. and others are saying in august the major action hits. also is there regulation about bringing up bait with us. or must we buy it there(in canada?) also is the minnnesota side beter?(esp considering the low water expected this spring? please check out our twincities fishing website also. all the fish with exception of the northern came out of city rivers and lakes. thanks

Jared The Fargo north dam is located about a block south of the toll bridge on 12 Av north. You either have to walk from toll brige to the dam or go into Mickelson field and back as far as you can and then walk in. Other dams in the area are downtown just south of Main Av and river. Dam just north of Wild rice and at Hickson just east of the Golf course. Also another dam which is on the Maple River located a couple blocks south of Cass 20 and just west of the Sheyenne river. At the Maple river dam please walk in as the land owner gets upset when people drive in. Good luck and have a good day.

Jared, The point is a good place(EGF side, where the Red Lake river dumps into the Red, right south of Cabella's). And the north boat landing is pretty popular. You not knowing the town to well, it's kinda hard for me to explain to you where it's at. It's behind RDO Foods on Mill Road. That's the road right to the east of Washington on the north side of Gateway Drive (highway 2). I haven't fished the Red much, having moved here myself not a real long time ago, so I'm going more on word of mouth, more than ex-perience.

Go in to Cabella's and ask some guys in the fishing department, I'm sure somone in there will steer you to a good spot.

Fished Saturday and Sunday with Dan of Cat Eye Outfitters in Selkirk. Nicest guy in the world! Fished hard sun-up to sun-down and didn't catch the fish like we thought. But it wasn't Dan's fault. He worked harder than anyone of us to put us on the fish and it just didn't pan out

I would recommend his services to anyone. He knows the river like the back of his hand. He is definitely world class as a person and a guide

A huge Thank You to him from all of us. You worked hard and we appreciated it

Things are going quite well for this time of year. If the weather holds we're in line for one of our best winter seasons we've had in a while --- but I'm just a youngin' eh! But seriously, the walleye bite has been good am and pm along breaks, humps and the odd rock pile. Saugers seem to be going most of the day. Shiners have been just as good as live bait and the jig reigns supreme(in all the typical Red River color combos - green/charts/orange/charts/blue/white silver/gold. Mobility is also a significant tactic to solving the winter walleye puzzle at this time of year. However, if a low pulls in or if it goes really cold in a hurry the bite will slow a bit, but that's why they call it fishing (and not catching)!). Get out and wet a line. The seasons a bit to long to just sit there.... ------------------ Dan Kiazyk Cat Eye Outfitter
