Put out the long rods again today. Not much of anything. The guys at the dam weren't catching anything either.
It was cold and windy almost all morning...when the sun came out I had to leave.
Oh well, that's why guys like Dennis get paid the big bucks!

THEY ARE BITING!
Walleyes are being caught at both the North Dam in Fargo and at the Kidder Dam in Whap. The fish are being caught mostly by fisherman using a plain hook and a weight and just leaving it sit on the bottom or by reeling it in ever so slowly.
Please remember that the only Walleyes a person can take are- no more than 2 under 18" and/or 1 over 28". None between 18" to 28".
It won't be too long before the "good" fish (Cats) start biting. Hopefully with the warm weather coming, the ice will leave the river. Once the ice is gone it only takes a week of decent weather to get the cats moving and biting.

WARNING: If you plan on putting your boat in the river asap please watch for ice flows. If you do put your boat in and are fishing please watch and have an escape route planned to avoid these. If you do get caught in the ice flows it will rip your boat apart and you can kiss it goodbye. Happy fishing, see you on the river.

The Drayton dam has been running fast all winter. Not sure you could get a boat in yet but maybe fish of the shore.

Two boat landings are open in the Fargo area. MB Johnson Park in Moorhead and below the Mid-town dam in Fargo. If you venture out be extremely careful though as large chunks of ice will be floating and can sink a boat easily.
I fished by the North Dam yesterday, slow but like Scott says, it sure was nice to get the long rods out and do some casting.
We have got about four inches of snow today, we might see a rise in the river yet this spring.
I heard that the Walleyes are starting down in the Whapeton area below the Kidder Dam. That's the rumor anyway.
I will let you know if the Walleyes start here in Fargo.

Dennis,
Thanks for the report. Yes, there is open water below the dam in Grand Forks. It open all the way to the North Landing in Grand Forks.
Unfortunately there is ice at the bottom of the boat landing, so launching a boat is not feasible.

The Red is starting to break up in the Fargo area. Altho the boat ramps are not useable yet, there is shore fishing opportunities below all the dams in town. I would suggest fishing the North Dam downstream from the construction that is going on right now. Walleyes and Northerns should be moveing upriver right now and will stack up below this dam. Live bait will work, such as a jig and minnow or just a hook and weight with a fathead minnow. Also suckers will be moving into these areas. They can be caught with just a hook and weight with crawlers. I usually catch a bunch of suckers in the spring and freeze them to use for bait in the summer for Cats.
Any open water below the dam in Grand Forks or Drayton?
Good Fishin!
