Jeff, the size of cutbait you use really depends on what size hook your using. Sometimes the peice I use is about 1" x 1" it all depends on how the fish are biting and what your looking for. I also like to go though the skin It seems to stay on the hook a little better.

Hey guys, I notice you using cut bait. How do you guys go about doing that, just catch some goldeye or carp and slice them up? How big of pieces do you use? What do you normally catch with that, catfish? Thanks!

Jeff

Hey Beau, I have fished the little coulee by the Hospital in the summer, caught about 10 northerns in about 2 hrs. Biggest was about 4 lbs. Its hard to get a place to fish because of the cattails, but the ones in there bite. There are also some HUGE carp that get trapped in there, I guess when the red is high in the spring.

I know they are good eating and fun to catch but I am a Northern Pike person always have been always will be I guess. Thanks again for the help. Scott you will never give up I know... Thanks for trying though your help is greatly appriciated.

I spent the day fishing for cats in the Fargo area. Even though the water temp. is still just 47, the cats are hungry! We had hits at every place we dropped the anchor. The majority of our fish were in the 3 lb range, no big fish, a couple pushing 8 would have been the largest. We did catch a couple of spawned out walleyes that were 26" each. They all were caught on cutbait, including the walleyes.

I expect the fishing to really pick up if we ever get any warm weather.

Good Cattin!

Have been doing real well on the walleyes at the "Y" in GF. We've been limiting out each time then playing catch and release for the remainder of the trip. Been out 7 times and had the same luck. Been fishing the current lines/breaks in 7-10 feet of water, backdragging leadheads and shiners. The size of the fish is unbelievable! Now is the time to poor it on! It doesn't get any easier than this!

Beau, I enjoy catfishing too, but I can certainly understand wanting to go after something else. The English Coulee diversion by Thompson is full of pike in the 3-6 lb range. Heck, even the portion of the Coulee that goes through Grand Forks holds good numbers of pike. There are always kids fishing on/near the UND campus for pike and I have seen them with some pretty impressive stringers of fish in the early summer.

Just spoke to Ray Pennington (engineer?) from the town of Selkirk....there will be no problem at all with the launch at Selkirk park. As he put it we've seen low water before and this year will not pose any unusual difficulties. The sucker run is on up here and a lot of us have had a chance to stock up for what I consider one of the better baits for the first part of the season. I've tried frozen goleye and it doesn't stack up for the first month or so with the fresh cut sucker. Yup, water is low but I don't think it'll be all that difficult to pattern cats.... they should be stacked below the gates (at the end of the tail-out or off to the sides of any current from the gates) or in holes up near the dam. One dilemna that I've got going this year is that I'm booked for a lot of bassin' and walleye in Eastern manitoba and North west Ontario besides cattin on the Red. What a dilemna to live in proximity to so much good fishing! We sure are lucky aren't we! Countdown is on, tight lines guys.
