A 15hp, it depends on what type of boat. Cats on the Red has 9.9 Hondas on their rental boats and they don't seem to have a problem.

The current is strong but the Red is diffently fishable. One just doesn't anchor in the main current. I have a 18 ft Lund and I don't even anchor in the main current. In a week or two the red should have dropped alot. It dropped abit yesterday, but it can stop raining ANY TIME.

Heh just wondering how the flow on the river is around Lockport, we only have a 15hp motor on our fishing boat and was wondering if you guys think that it will be able to handle the current on the Red right now?

Hope to get out there in the next week or two and try our luck.

Take er easy

Just another update for the Red........

The trio from Kentucky have just completed 7 days of grueling sport! Their numbers caught and released during this past week......505 channel cats! That's a daily average of 72 cats, many of these fish going twenty pounds or better. After speaking with this group, they claim that it was by far the best trip to the Red to date. In 7 years they have never caught so many big cats between 25 to thirty pounds. The largest for the week was an honest 35 pounder!

I wonder how long it will be before someone cracks another forty pounder?

I couldn't agree with you more Richard and I'm also fully aware of the fact that by far the vast majority of those keeping those big trophy's are not from your region, in most cases there're from more southern destinations.

Mr. McKay;

I agree that the Red River fishery is fantastic right now. The cats I've been fishing for are in the 5-15 lb range. Like most fisherman in the ND/MN region I do catch and release these great fish... Those who don't, I guess they have their reasons. The best eating cats are in the 2-4lb range. I look forward to going north of the border sometime this summer and catch fish with my Canadian friends.

If these monsters give you a battle to remember, it makes sense to me to let them do battle with someone else.

The 2004 season has been one of the better ones as far as numbers of big fish that are being produced!!!! It seems that everyone is catching, some are catching at much higher rates than others simply becauser they choose to use more desireable baits. Baits like fresh sucker is undoubtably a top producer at this early stage of the game. Cats are being caught on a wide variety of baits ranging from shrimp, calamari, crawlers, even shiner minnows, now talk about aggressive kitties!

This partern will continue for weeks to come and as long as the river levels remain high anglers will continue to enjoy great success.

There's been loads of fish in the twenty pound and up category. the largest that I know of is an honest 35 plus pounder! Actually there's been at least two in this size range. Catch & release has been an incredibly successful story here on this portion of the Red River. I only wish Mn. and N.D. would follow suit and impose the same restrictions, that would only benefit the resource. Besides why would anyone want to eat a twenty year old catfish in the first place!!!! I feel that in time, with the right consultation and negotation with the respective DNR's from both jurisdiction's, the idea of catch & release odf "all" cats over twenty four inches can be a reality.

Dan:

The water is higher today at Lockport than it was say 4 days ago but that only seems to turn the kitties on more. When they open a section of the locks all one has to do is anchor behind bends. No matter how high the water gets at Lockport there is ALWAYS places to anchor and catch kitties. Yesterday, Saturday, we had 3 lines out and the tally was 20 with several over the magical 20 lb mark. One lady was new to fishing and it took her alittle bit to get on to it but once she did the guys had to look out. If she had any experience fishing before I am sure she would have kicked a--, as it was she did land the largest fish and ended up with 6 fish. Oh yes, that was only 4 hrs of fishing. Any day U can catch 20 kitties with several over 20 lbs in just 4 hrs it is a good day.

The wind on Sat made it harder to fish and the forcast for the rest of the week is warm and lighter winds so all it can do is get better.

Lockport, Saturday, May, 15th.........Today was our season opener and the best description on how it all unfolded would simply have to be "absolutely Incredible"! The action was fast and furious, more so for some than others, but then again that always seems too be the case. To give you an indication how the catch'n went for some, two boy's from Scott County called it a day after catching and releasing 100 kitties!!!!! A trio from Kentucky thru in the towel at 80!!! There were many others who fared well, there were many who simply had the time of their lives. Water conditions.......the river's up a couple of feet and will probably rise a couple more before it crests. One section of the dam here in lockport was removed this morning because of the rising waters, but this only gets those big cats in a more aggressive feeding mode. Tomorrow's just another day and another day for those who have tralled to the Red to battle that most worthy opponent, ol'whiskers!

Anyone know how the water levels are up in Lockport. It is too high to fish right now in Grand Forks. Any hope it might be fishable up there a week from now? Oh yeah, and has the fishing been any good?

I guess it doesn't matter where you go on the Red, you're going to catch fish. I can't remember the last time I got skunked. It all depends what you're fishing for. The cats that weigh between 1-2 pounds are the best eating. You can catch them by the truck load (worms or flatheads). The larger cats are fun to catch but need to be released (my humble opinion). I'm still trying to figure out how to catch Walleye. I know there are more experienced folks out there. Maybe you fellow fishermen can help me out. CYA

Recipe... Catfish do have an oily taste if you don't sautee them first. Peel the skin away, cut the head off, and gut the fish. Don't filet. Put the fish in a pan and pour a bottle of wine into the pan. Don't go out and buy an expensive bottle. The wine gets rid of the oily taste. Let the fish sautee for about 4 hours (turning every hour). Then brush Worchester Sauce on both sides of the fish and wrap in foil. Grill 5 minutes on one side and 5 minutes on the other. Bon Apetite!

Fishing at the Drayton dam this weekend (Saturday)was sporadic at best. Caught a couple 5-7lb cats along with quite a few good eating 1-2lb kittys. Not too many people like eating catfish around here...can't understand why. Folks in the South love em, me included. Preparation is the key... anyone interested in a great recipe, just respond on this chat board.

I also saw a few Northerns and Sauger caught. See ya
