Does anyone Know if the coolie Divirson Project has Ice able to fish safely on. I know in the summer there is awsome bass, and northern action but never fished in the winter. Does anyone have any insides for me. If you do Let Me Know. Thanx.

Be safe and Good luck Fisherman.

Yes there is ice and they are fishing it. From the Selkirk Park North to Sugar Island some nice walleye and sauger have been caught this past week.

Not all of the ice is good, caution is needed yet. Some areas have 4-6" and others less.

A quick note for safeties sake. The local and regional rivers and urban ponds are crusting over with ice. With everyone home for the holiday kids like to roam the outdoors searching for “Something to Do”.

Please take a moment and chat with them on the dangers of this early ice. All too frequently we hear of tragedies due to this early testing of the ice. So lets all take the time to speak to these young voyagers on ice safety concerns.

Have a safe and happy holiday.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

River on the fall but still high. Seeing some good sauger action on the creek mouths in the evening, a few nice walleye too.

Kinda slow, jigs and big fathead minnows worked tight to shore doing the best for me. I found a area of flooded willows that has been producing sauger and walleye most every evening. I think they hunt in and near them willows most of the night? Creek mouths have been the best and just up into them. Caught a bunch of fish in the willows or just in front of them.

Cold and muddy fishing yet there are fish to be caught if you work at it. Brrrrrr!

Wear bright colors for safety while fishing as the deer hunters may not see you well if you do not.

Just a heads up folks, the Red River is rising quickly and darkening up just as fast. Expect a good shot of water and color soon. More heavy rains to the South last night so odds are very good it will jump up even more in the next 3-4 days.

I won't even try to fish the main Red here for walleye for a while. I did try the feeder creeks today and found nice sauger and a few walleye and pike. Common deal in the fall here is to see the fish head into the tributaries seeking slower water if the Red backs up. This pattern can be good fishing at times.

We seen some cats caught today on the Red in a larger backwater on a dam. With this heavy flow we may see a last ho-raw for cats before they again back off?

Pine Falls reports still sound strong so if your headed North I feel under the present conditions the Winnipeg River is the best bet going.

Anyhow, more rain...lots of turbid water headed your way.

Spent today on the Red River between sugar island at Selkirk and the golden mile across from Doc Reids, trolling with shad raps and wally divers in 8-14' depths. The weather wasn't all that bad, just cloudy, rain, cold and miserable!

There were 6 boats that we counted on the water between 10 am and 5 pm fishing this area. Only 1 boat with three anglers had a measure of success with three wally, count them , just three wally, and they were parked off the point across from the boat launch at Selkirk Park. From 1 pm to 5 pm no less.

My mistake, trolling with crank-baits, shame on me! The idea was to hammer a few larger greenbacks with these deadly cranks? Sometimes I wonder if these fancy assed crank baits in marvelous colors were meant to catch fishermen?

Anyway, a slow day on the water is better than a good day at work!

We hit it hard on the Canadian Red this past weekend...in the rain..and more rain...and wind...and more cold rain.

The report for us for the weekend was lots of little fish both walleye and sauger, a mix of 22" to 26" walleye and the one true hog up to the boat but not in the boat. My guess..a very fat 33"..maybe a bit bigger...it was very sumo? That Greenback will give Big Shanon some nightmares and fits for a long time I think?

They all hit very light so you never know what it may be tell you set the hook and feel the weight. A tiny sauger hit just as lightly/hard as a hog...ya just never know?

The thin Power Pro line was a huge help in bite detection! Shanon had mono on and I talked him into spooling with the 4/15 and he began to feel the super light hits and hook-up on more fish.

Me..I never set the hook into anything "big" this trip. I'll be back, she is waiting for me.

We did our best slow slipping 1/2-3/4 oz Char or Pink jigs tipped with Salties and a stinger hook. We jigged/dragged the bottom with the aid of the bow mount electric and zig-zagging downstream over the shallow flats on the miracle mile. Six feet and often five feet was the best holding areas. If we found a hump that produced a few fish per pass we anchored on it and vertical jigged tell we got bored..then we slipped and jigged again.

A little flurry at dawn, then search the mid day away looking for strays. The last two hours before dusk seen our better fish and the one hog Shanon had on. With that massive cold front sliding through and the never ending cold rain I think we did what we could? We fished from dawn to dusk every day so we gave it a hard go.

The Winnipeg River and in particular Traverse Bay is really taking off! Spoke with some Canadian anglers who said the Pine Falls bite was truly incredible. Many big walleye being caught on humps in the bay. They caught 40 over #8 last Thursday in one boat alone...that is enough to get a guys attention...it did mine.

With the steady rain this weekend and the word was it would only rain more..plus more winds from the West we chickened out on pulling up off the Red and heading to fish Traverse Bay on Sunday. Might regret that decision for a while? We had all the wet we could handle and the thought of 5-6' rollers and even more wet didn't sound all that much fun even if the bite was hot.

We seen a few #9 plus fish caught on the Red but it was just not our turn this trip. Had fun even with the challenging weather and touchy bite...I'll be back.

Go figure...lots of sun today back home here in Fargo...must be a Monday Huh?

We went fishing last two weekends ago at lockport and the wind was strong and cold...easily below the freezing point...not much action but a few tiny bullhead...they were so small u probably could just put the hook right through them and reuse them as bait....we went to breezy point and caught two jackheads with bacon two fish almost equalling 25lbs....sometimes we use saugers to catch giant cat...we try to catch some saugers first then use them as bait....as kenny says keep changing ur bait and see what the flavour of the day is

I just went out yesterday it was very cold and windy. Not a thing was bitting. I was by in Riverside park using usuallys good secrect bait. And nothing I'm thinking it was because of the weather. And the big cats are very suspisios there trying to find warm shallow water. So I think that they are moving out.

QUESTION- Do catfish bit while Ice Fishing on the Red River?

Just wanted to add a few comments to those who enjoy fishing the Red from Lockport to Selkirk and beyond to the main lake. I have had the good fortune to fish this area for going on 30 years, and, it's not uncommon to have mixed results. As far as " greenback" migrations are concerned, we may never in our lifetimes see again the numbers we enjoyed in 2000/2001.

With higher water levels, traditional areas that produced success before, do change, especially along the east side of the river. There are still some good sized walleye to be caught ( 30/34") but nowhere near the numbers as 4-5 years back.

Also important to note is that the number of people on the water and shorelines fishing are far less than in previous years, as I can remember counting up to 200 boats between Sugar Island and Netley Lake in years gone by. Now that count may be somewhere around 30-40 boats on any given day.

Don't despair, any day on the water is better than a good day at work!

Regards, Andy

Fished the Red at Selkirk/Lockport last weekend. Caught quite a few fish. Largest was 29", but at least 10 fish over 22". Jigging in 6-10 feet of water worked best. I talked to lots of guys up there and there were mixed results. Most caught a few fish every day, with at least one at 26" plus. We got lucky in numbers, but talked to lots of guys that struggled.

St. Walleye,

I'm not sure if anyone told you or not but it's called fishing and not catching for a reason. Just because someone caught fish one day doesn't mean you are going to catch fish the next. I have heard some great reports from that area and even seen pictures. Go out tomorrow and you may slay them.

We fished on the Red River (Canada) around Lockport/Selkirk and North of the above mentioned spots with terrible results. We have been fishing the Red River for 5-6 years and have never had such bad fishing!!! As far as some of the reports listed in this forum....I believe them to be false. There were lots of anglers we spoke with in the 2 days of fishing and they all had the same results and comments....are you guys sure it was the Red River in Lockport you have been reporting about. October 9/10/2004 is the days that we spent on the river. Should have listened to my Biologist buddy when he said it was going to be poor this year.

Here is a report from Stu at "Cats on the Red" that will interest you Greenback hunters.

10-05-2004 09:06 AM ----- Just a quick update on what's been happening on the Red so far this fall.

With the increased flow my predictions for a strong showing of 'eyes is now being realized. For example last week from Monday thru Saturday one of my top guides produced a total of Fourteen trophy 'eyes between 28 to 33 inches! That's more than all my guys did last fall!

With the continued sunny weather coming our way, this week should be fantastic!

FISH HARD/GOLF HARD!

Sounds very encouraging guys!
