I was wondering how the walleyes were hitting on just a plain florescent green jig with a double tailed mr. Twister. Because a few years back my dad and uncle were out fishing out by the telephone poles out by Woodland resort and they were popping some nice walleyes and Northern. Also I was wondering if the tree tops are any good for icefishing. Also I would like to know about any ice fishing contests going on at all this year if there are any

People need to remember that ND state law requires that fish houses be searapted by 50 feet, not 5 or 10 or 25, yes 50 FEET. I'm getting sick of having to tell people not to fish 5 feet outside my door. Please show respect to other fisherman and not crowd them out of their own spots. THANKS

Just to let you know, the spot that is marked with orange cones was open water. It is the area where my house was before we lifted it out of the ice. It was one of the houses that went through during that warm spell. Just FYI.

fished main bay on sunday and today. sunday we caught 4, well 3 but a 2 ponder was in the house and got off the hook at the hole, actually had it on the floor for a brief moment before it flopped perfectly head first into a different hole. (funny house those little buggers can make you act just like them, flopping around on the floor). we kept 1 on sunday which was 3 lbs. today i went by myself to the same spot caught 4 kept 3 that were 1 lb had a monster up to the bottom of the ice just coulndnt get it through the hole. two good tail whips and the jig broke off. my guess on the size is 6 lbs give or take. had several others on that would have been eaters but got off for whatever reason. i think i need to put a little bigger trebles on the jig im using. all in all its been a blast out there. if i could i would go everyday. wish i could afford an aqua view to check those critters and see what makes them tick. we have a house on mainbay in 17 feet of water which is where i have been fishing. the bite today began at 2:30 and lasted till 6:30 which is better then it was in the past few weeks. normally it wasnt starting till 4:30. tight lines everyone.

Sully, Yes, there are a few people that fish the Red in the Fargo area in the winter. This is the easiest time of the year to catch those ugly green fish (walleyes). You will also catch quite a few Goldeyes and maybe, if you are lucky, a cat or two. The best areas are deeper spots with less current. These areas almost always have some fish in them. Getting them to bite may be another story though.
Becareful, river ice is never safe. It is best to stay close to shore when moving up and down the river. When you get to an area you would like to fish, test the ice every few feet as you make your way out to deeper water.
I have not fished the river yet this winter. I have a son that plays hockey so the only ice I see is in the hockey arena. Check with Ed Carlson of Horace though as he fishes the river quite frequently.
Good luck!

Fished South Golden on Sunday. Caught 31 small perch in and hour. Nothing over 8". Drove on the ice and bad spots were marked with orange cones.
Also fished Thompson Dam on Saturday. Caught 21 perch for 4-6". Didn't really bite until 3:30.

7 of us fished Mission, south Black Tiger, Haybale, Creel and East Bay on the 18th and 19th. Black Tiger produced numerous bait sized perch and East Bay produced about 20 perch from 8 to 10 inches. Are these North Dakota JUMBO's. The funniest thing was talking to the 9 guys from Minneappolis who paid $50 bucks a day for a 6x6 ice shack for all 9 of them. Lucky they brought ther portables with them.

This business of the nets on the river has me upset. How do we stop this
On the basis that the story in the Free Press is true, how can one person have five nets , some with no name, on the river for food
under whose jurisdiction does this follow and what can we do about this?
Perhaps we organize a net removal party this weekend and all the legitimate fisherman attend

Fished Saturday, 1/18, did decent on walleyes at Budweiser in 10' water. They sat on the bottom and wouldn't even look at the lure until I put on a bright-colored buckshot and rattled it aggressively, which got them to bite. Caught 7, but threw back 5. Did well on perch in the later morning/early afternoon at Swanson's in 45' water using a glow hali tipped with spikes, and also did decent using a full minnow on a genz worm. From the looks of it out there, everyone was doing well on perch at Swanson's so I'm not sure it mattered to much what was being used but that's what I had luck on.

On the basis that the article in the Winnipeg Free Press is correct and one individual has five nets and some are un marked , it is preposterous to assume that one needs five nets to feed himself
what can we do to stop this?
Will the RCMP lay charges
or is it an issue for Manitoba politicions
My understanding is that the RCMP are responsible for all laws outside the city limits
can we organize all the fisherman on the river north of lockport to stop this situation
comments?

Due to the recent tragedy of the loss of a young man through the ice on a snowmobile here on the Red River. I am compelled to again caution people to use EXTREAM caution on rivers and lakes this season.
On rivers sledding is popular and often very safe if you fallow some rules.
1- Stay clear of bridges. Ice near bridges is often thin due to faster more focused flows and salt run off from the roadway. A rule of thumb is the river will run the easiest rout and therefore avoid those paths under bridges.
2- Stay far away from above and below any dams and/or riffles on rivers. The high amount of turbulence will NEVER allow safe ice to form in these areas. Thin ice may extend several hundred yards below a dam or above a dam. Know where these areas are ahead of time!
3- Never assume anything on ice. Just because you see other track on the ice does not mean the conditions NOW will hold you up. Assumptions will kill you!
4- When sledding or fishing keep in eyeshot of your companions. Know where everyone is, do a buddy system, your buddy may save your life. I would recommend every sled have a throw rope handy, as would I also for ice fisherman. Tie a large loop on each end big enough to slip around your body or wrap around an object quickly. Let others know where you go.
Be safe folks. Winter can be fun, yet it also has its potential dangers. No amount of safety is too much safety.
Thank you,
Ed “Backwater Eddy” Carlson

Slamming the Jumbo's on the north end of the lake. There must be one small school left in the lake, it's not easy to track them down....but once you find them, you can fill a pail in a hurry. Up to 13.5". I heard that some guy from Pekin caught a trout in here, is that true? He said that he also saw a few on his underwater camera.

Just a comment about Stump Lake...I have to disagree with the comments stating that this lake is fished out. That is hardly the case but I will agree that the bite here is tough to come by. Numerous times I have been on this lake in the past year or so and have had some decent luck with the perch. It seems during the early ice fishing season it works the best and then they simply shut off for the rest of the season. This lake I feel is only just starting to be something special. Walleyes have been put into this lake and only time will tell how they grow. I know this fact for the stocking reports by this state and seeing one on the camera. This is all backed up by a uncle of mine actually catching one in December. Sure this lake is tough but when its on, its on and producing a ton of fun.
