Spent Sunday in near channel A on my last ice fishing adventure for the year. Didn't get alot of action, only about 10 flags. I think we were a little early for the spring run. Maybe they will be running in a couple weeks.

The North landing isn't looking to well. The land slumping cause by the under cut of the rivers currents is taking its toll on the ramp. Year after year this gets worse. I was down there Sun Afternoon looking at it and It could be very tricky with the drop it left this spring. Lets just hope that when the frost comes out that it doesn't get any worse. Many people think that this is caused from frost heaves. Some of it might but most is cause from the location of the ramp and the currents from the river. These currents affect to soft underlaying muds eroding them away causing the upper layers to slump. I have seen these slumps fall as much a ten feet in one spring, if that ever happened you all know what the ramp wouold look like. This will always be a problem with the North Ramp and something the North End anglers will always have to put up with until the ramp is moved. A new ramp won't take care of this problem only a new location will.
that causes undercurrents to cut away the soft undermuds under the bank itself

Just a quick note- the ice is gone from the North Landing. I saw several people out with the long rods yeaterday down by the Riverside dam.
Several new cracks in the blacktop at the North Landing. (What's new?)
Ice is breaking up all over!
Get your long rods ready!

Brad, Nothing like a home cooked meal. I can understand your thinking. I am sure your parents like you visiting and I am sure your mom gets the kitchen a cookin. I think most moms enjoy that sort of thing for s short time anyway. My mom enjoyed catering to my guests when I was on the road with the band. When we played Jamestown she would have a spread that would rival a Las Vegas buffet. I sure do miss them days. goodluck and Godspeed to ya!!

I recomend to all to stay away from the spirit water inn. He had written to Tony Dean about us ND residents being aligned with Peta. You can check out his stements for yourself on tony dean's website. he then those a sales pitch at the end. What a guy!! great buisness sense.

I sense a little jealousy in the air. Not all of us can fish all day, everyday like myself. To quell some of my critics, all fish have been released in the last 3 weeks, except for the bucket of perch and limit of walleyes my buddy wanted to take home last night. And to those afraid to drive on the ice, I drive my 1/2 ton chevy 30 mph past you and laugh cuz there still is plenty of ice left. And yes you can call it my lake, I've fished here for the last 35 years.

I'm surprised to see so many reports here from people that live 640 miles away from Devils Lake. I was there a couple weeks ago and almost froze to death. For the first time we caught few fish. The lake has also changed a lot. Many of the trees are now gone. We plan to try again on March 25. Does anybody know the ice conditions? I see they closed all the landings. Don't know if we can even get on the lake.
To Joker, I was there on May 18 last year and caught 80 white Bass in about 3 1/2 hours and they were HUGE. If you find them fishing is fantastic.

Headed to DL from Mandan this weekend. I asked Ed's for some advice on 6 mile (where I am planning to fish). Sure they sell bait, and we all have heard jargon from bait shops, but I for one really appreciate something to go by. Thanks kindly!
Here is his personal response to my ..........
The edges of the ice are starting to deteriorate and theirs quite a bit of water on the ice due to the snow melting. We play the safe side and recommend atv's if you have them. Black Tiger and the mouth of Creel are still producing some fish, but you have to sort through a lot of small ones. In Six Mile they've been getting a lot of walleyes, but most are pretty small as well. There are some nicer ones being caught there though....
Good Luck

Ron, stay away from the spirit water inn also the woodland resort. I like the Davis motel. It is old and not fancy but comfortable and cheap. Plus the people there are very nice. make your reservations early cause they tend to be busy in the summer. goodluck and stay away from the Cove at woodland resort. A guy that goes by the handle of cootkiller works there and he wants to sell our resources to the highest bidder. I hope you nail those eyes. In june the trees produce the best action.

Well Fritz seems to be into himself a little to much. People like him are the real reason the lake will die. They will horde their info, thats if it is true, and will tell all who venture to the lake from afar that its worthless to even try. Cuz He is a native DLian and it is his lake and not ours. I hope the future is bright for him, cuz we know if all are like him then why even plan on going to the lake. Lets save our money and go have fun somewhere else rather than listen to him make an ass of himself.. By the way Im not from DL but fish there alot Fritz, and recently I have been killing the fish all over the lake. I guess Im better than the average non yokel....... I is outta here.....

Chad, Got mine in at noon. There were just over one hundred when I got it in. They told me if they receive over 135 total with the drop ins and the ones that were postmarked the 17th that I would have to get drawn from those, when they draw April 1st. Kindof makes if an evening playing feild for the ones that live out of state.
I myself don't think they should hold spots for last years top 15. I think maybe the top five. With last years champs getting in for free. This means the number two team from last year gets in right CHAD, good luck.
Say you plan on fishing any summer league nights this summer. Since I have just seen your picture and would like to meet you in person, maybe we can plan a invoman night on the river this summer and get the guys together for a fun night of fishing. Catch you later

The ice really sucks, with the edges being the worst. water covers virtually the whole lake once the temperature hits 50 degrees. soon nobody will be fishing out there if the weather stays this warm.

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.......zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz..........., what?? Look at the size of that,.....it's HUGE!! If ya want a report here's one for ya. Last outting 2 eyes weighing in at 6 and 9 lbs., a limit of 17"ers and perch averaging 1 1/2 lbs, some close to 2 1/4. Funny thing is not one person within seeing distance, and have been fishing the same holes for the last 2 weeks, best part is that they don't even freeze up at night!! The $100 question is where are we?? Boy, by the looks of that tree and that hill must be in the ...............bay. Going out again tonite and the rest of the week for sure!! To bad I'm not a guide, could be makin some serious cash!! Aw, on second thought maybe I'll just keep my spots to myself.

Just checked the Fishing Buddy report and guess what I found....fishing reports. C'mon guys lets keep the sportsman's spirit and keep this page to reports not petty bickering. If you want that get married.
Now, we are headed to DL on the 28th and would appreciate any info on ice conditions, landings and of course the bite from now until our arrival. If there is any one out there that plans on fishing the same time frame we would be happy to share info on the action. The more people covering water the better!
For what it's worth, DL is a great fishery and we have always been treated great by any of the locals we have talked to. Thanks to all for your hospitality.

Kent, Suckers are easy to catch in the spring when they are moving up river. I also catch quite a few in the late summer or fall. Just fish nightcrawlers on the bottom and you can't help but catch a few. The trouble is sorting through all the other fish you catch while using nightcrawlers. You know those darn pesky walleyes and carp and other junk fish.
The spot I saw you last spring is a good place to start as we filled the live well with suckers that day. Just fish one rod with crawlers and the other you can fish for walleyes.
Suckers are in all the rivers around here and are fun to catch and will make great bait for the catfish this next summer. They freeze well and will stay fresh well into the summer in your freezer.
Hope to work out a time to fish with you up your way this summer.

Hey Doc,
ITs good to see some people giving fritz some feedback, I can relate to your situation ive been going to DL for 4 years and 3 of those 4 the perch patrol has followed us. I don't know if its our guide series gear from caberlas or if they just see us catching perch. Hope the fishing is as good as last year limited out on the jumbos two days plus can't beat those big northerns, Lot better than shawano lake, Good luck to everyone.

Fished the Narrows and Mission Bay. Drilled about 60 holes and ended up with a dozen perch. I'm glad the ice wasn't a few inches thicker as i had forgotten my auger extension. Tried all different depths and presentations but couldn't seem to find anything. Most others that i talked to seem to fair about the same as I. Anyone try six mile today? Might try there tomorrow

Doc, not to make this a negative post, but most times people see a lot of vehicles(20 guys) and they automatically asume that you are catching fish. The perch patrol often fishes off by themselves. You will barely see those guys dropping off on someone elses school like most people do. So its probably just the people who cant find their own fish that are following your big group around. Now for the fishing report....It has been a $#itty weekend to start off with. 10 hrs of fishing today and came home with 10 perch and 2 walleyes. Could not find an active school all day long and it sure looked like a lot of people gave up and went home. Maybe the fish will turn on tomorrow when its nice out again. Tried the main bay from the towers to domehouse, and then out from wolfords bay to rocky point. Came back and fished all afternoon in the 40+ weather at Howards Bay for the eyes(it has been hot there for a couple weeks now but not today). With the warm weather its really making travel on the lake a lot easier. Good luck

DL, it just doesn't get any better than this!! Perch are almost to easy to come by, been fishing the same spot for the last 4 weeks, too bad going to have to pull the permanent off the HOT SPOT this saturday. Anyhow I might overreact from time to time, but it would seem as though the TRUE sportman, as of late, is a dying breed. I guess what I'm trying to say is that if I don't know you personally, there is no way I'm going to reveal any hot spots to you. Like I said previously, too many people want to know where the fish are biting, but nobody wants to go looking for them. Thats where I've had enough. Until next time, GOOD luck to all.

Fishing on DL is hard to get a hotspot unless you fish for walleye. Perch move day to day so there isnt really a "hot spot" but they do not move far from where they were the day before. If you work your butt off finding an aggressive school, look around the same spot the next day and you will probably stumble on top of them again. But dont expect to drill a couple holes, drill at least a couple dozen in search of them. A lot of anglers, especially new ones to DL, often move a couple times and then they get frustrated and sit on top of their holes expecting the fish to come with them. yes this sometimes works, but dont count on it. The perch are out there, just find them and dont let anyone else know, eventually someone will come around and fish by you and of course catch a few and tell everyone else, but what can you do about that besides nothing? Walleye fishing is different, once you find the good bite, zip your lips cuz you will have good luck for a week or 2. GOOD LUCK

To Fritz;
I consider myself a sportsman, Fritz. I didn't mean for everyone not to come out and enjoy all the beauty of MN and the Dakotas. But if someone makes the trip with expectations of a huge catch, and is vocally disappointed, I'll take issue with them. I hope they realize the secret to a great outing is the outing itself, not the weight of the gamebag or how full the pail. Some of the most memorable outings involve meeting a challenge--be it tough weather, finding the willing fish, or even just getting to your destination.
How much of a challenge is there fishing huge Devils Lake? I think it is a great challenge and adventure! If your dreams are to catch alot of fish, they might be realized on DL. But you might have to be willing to try everything you can, and be willing to admit that the fish and/or the lake itself defeated your best efforts. Then it's time to smile to yourself and start thinking of the next time you can test your skills and luck on the lake!
I went on a guided elk hunt once, a migration hunt that can be fantastic if there is snow. Guess what--no snow! I was disappointed in the lack of elk, yes. But I was amazed at the scenery, the knowledge of the guides, the strength of the horses. It was still a great experience!
I wish all sportsman the best...may they enjoy each outing for its own merits.
Bullhead
