MY FAMILY AND I ARE LIFE LONG WATERFOWL HUNTERS. WE ARE GOING TO CAVALIER COUNTY THIS FALL TO DUCK AND GOOSE HUNT. THIS WILL BE OWER FIRST TRIP IN THAT AREA. AM I GOING TO HAVE TO PAY A TON OF MONEY TO GET ONTO SOME FIELDS AND SHOOT SOME GEESE? I KEEP SEEING COMMENTS ABOUT OUT OF STATE TAGS ON THIS WEB SITE. DOES THIS MEAN THAT A LAND OWNER IS GOING TO KICK ME OFF HIS NON-POSTED LAND JUST BECAUSE I'M FROM OUT OF STATE? I UNDERSTAND WHAT IS GOING ON, WISCONSIN IS POSTED FROM ONE END TO THE OTHER. I JUST WANT TO COME OUT AND HUNT.

THANKS, AARON

Water temperature 63F no wonder those kitties are going ballistic! I spent a couple of hours on the Red last evening and was totally amazed by the aggressive nature in which the cats were feeding! I mean they were literally spanking the fresh cuts of goldeye we were throwing at them. In just under 2 1/2 hours we caught and released a wack of "BIG" kitties only two were under twenty pounds! To date the 2004 season has to be considered the absolute best on record.......I can't wait to see what September has in store!

Hoo-Ya...Kinda Cool out Eh...but the good deal is... the fish'n is heating up quickly.

Ya know, I dream about falls like this one is shaping up to be. If the trend continues...Ohh-Weee...this could be a fall to remember. Early cooling temps and a L-O-N-G cool Fall weather pattern to stimulate them hungry fish, these conditions often spells out the fishing years to remember.

Yup..it is kinda early to say that is indeed the deal, yet looking back at the season in a nutshell, I would bet a cool fall will be the deal in 2004.

Why do I drool when I see this early cooling pattern setting up? Well fish on average put on their greatest weight gains in the fall, and they do that by feeding big, well, and often. If they be a feeding, then they be a better target then average target to shoot for.

If the forage base is good they will quickly target it and chow down heavy tell the ice sets in for good. After a brief slowing at early ice they tend to go right back on the chow wagon. Fall and early winter often produces the best trophy fishing of the season for species such as walleye, catfish and muskie.

Sure...some folks are whining about the early cool temps...Baaaa....not me. I say Bring it on...I got wool socks...I'll be just fine.

Some falls are more Golden then others, this may be a Golden Season in the making. I have a hunch I will be smiling wide at the rivers side, be it day and night this fall season.

Fishing for cats on the Red in North Dakota continues to be very good. The Drayton dam is the hotspot for big cats right now. The fish are biting earlier in the morning and later in the afternoon. Many cats above 20 lbs. are being caught, with many in the upper teens. Cut suckers, frogs and golden eyes are the prefered bait. Two of us caught a 20+, two 19s and many from 15 to 19 lbs. in a few hours last Friday afternoon. Saturday was slow until later in the afternoon when results were again similar. Near Grand Forks, the fishing is good as well. Expect to catch one in the mid teens each time out........Two of us caught two 16s last Sunday. Fish above holes or above downed trees. Give the catfish up to 1/2 hour to smell the bait, if no bites, move to a new spot. Use your depthfinder to find holes holding fish. See a hole with fish in it, anchor above the hole........you'll catch fish. Same with downed trees. Anchor above them, wait for the big cats to come out after smelling your bait and you'll catch some nice cats. Downed trees in areas of deeper water are preferred. Cut suckers and goldeneye are working well. Frogs, if you can find them is working well too. Don't get stuck on one spot for too long...move frequently and you'll get some big fellas!!

Steve you are coming to late, the bite is really on in early to mid July on the big lake. This does not mean that you will not catch fish, just probably not the numbers that you would have earlier in the summer. Water is really low so you need to choose a place that will have low water access.

Sauger Run underway!

Once again the sauger run is underway here on the Lower Red and there's also some 'eyes being caught as well. In fact Backwater Eddy had some interesting results last Friday while cork'n for kitties off the rock's on the east side. He decided to throw a few Salmo's at 'em to see whether or not they'd cooperate. They did; not only did he have success by catching a few "big" kitties on the artificials he also caught three walleye, the largest going 27-1/2 inches! Getting back to the sauger action, those fishing directly below the dam are catching high volumes with the occasional walleye thrown into the equation. With the ever so slight increase in flows this year the forecast looks very promissing for a strong showing of trophy 'eyes begining next month! Only time will time so we will have to sit back and be patient for another 4-5 weeks before the fall run begins. With the past three dismal falls behind us we're due for a bumper crop! Cats should be ballistic come September as well, then again we expect nothing less of them do we!

A buffalo fish is like a carp but they are alot larger. I'm going up to the Red River in a couple of weeks and planning on fishing in the Whapeton/Breckinridge areas for the first time. Can anyone tell me how the fishing is in these areas(Kidder Campground)? Or is going further North towards Fargo better? Any good advice will do! Thanks, Andre

I'm fishing on the Missouri river all the times between Sioux City to Homer,Neb. All i fish is for big cats, mostly flatheads, i use 6 to 8 inch live bullheads on the tips of the wingdams and on the rip-raps. Caught some pretty nice ones at about 3 to 12 pounders. Also got 14 setlines on the ripraps and this month i've already caught 8 nice size flatheads, and one big one that was up to 25 pounds. Surprisly caught one big Sauger eye that was 27 inches on 8 inch bullhead. Well e-mail me if you got any good fishing stories or good tips for catching Flatheads. Later Catmens.

Fritz,

What planet must I be from? Being a property owner in a state other than the one you reside in has never been a qualification for resident priveleges. I just don't get how people see things only from their self-centered perspective. Would I get MN resident priveleges or hunting fee breaks if I owned property in Minnesota while living in ND?

Property taxes are a requirement for the privelege of owning property. Is ND the only state that has this implimentation?

There's an old saying that may apply in Jami's case. "Bad company corrupts good character."

Jami, are you serious??

Turn the scenario around 360 degrees. What about the nonres lake owners who get 'taken' on their MN property tax?? Is that fair?? The nonres vs ND issue is OLD and DATED.

People need to find something new to complain about. Example, loss of CRP or habitat.

Remember you live in MN, not ND. You're not entitled to any special treatment, just cuz you own land.

And the MAYHEM continues! Well this appears to be the case judging the way the two Brad's and Jason tore into them recently...way to go guy's! How did the second leg of your trip pan out? I know the sturgeon effort was slow and its apparent they have shifted down into their summer huants. They are still very accessible you just have to locate them. Did you enjoy good success up river? The scenery up the Winnipeg is pretty special isn't it!

Canuck,

I will say the answer to your question is YES!! If I could come back up today I would. I have had some great action up there but this past weekend took the cake.

There were three guys with two days to fish. The total for the two days was 77 cats landed and 12 lost. We had 30 cats the first day and 48 the second with 38 of those coming in just over four hours. Only two of the 77 were under 30" and the largest was 37.5 inches and weighed in at just over 32 pounds.

I also should mention that the folks at Cats on the Red were fabulas as always and it made for another great experience. If anyone hasn't experienced the lower Red I suggest you go there. IT'S AMAZING!!!

So to answer your question again. Ya I would come back. NO QUESTION.

Fished the north side of the Dam at Darling. Not much luck out there. A couple of bullheads. Saw one guy pull out a northern, but it was a little guy. A little more luck up at Grano with the walleye. I am new to fishing for walleye and northern. It seems they are kind of picky and unpredictable. Does anyone have any tips or tricks to offer? I know that the southeast side of Grano is very popular.. but that can't be the ONLY place that the fish are hitting... or CAN it???

The goldeyes were hungry on every cast and the cats seemed to just be waiting for me to cut them up and throw them out to them. Also the carp action was amazing. If I went 5 minutes without a fish on the line, it was thought to be getting slow. Will head out again this evening in hopes of another great day on the banks of the Red. Don't you think there should be a break on out-of-state hunting fees for property owners? We have own land for 30 years in North Dakota and been paying taxes on it, keeping it up, etc. We use the land for hunting and horseback riding. If we are contributing to the State already, why should we pay more in hunting fees than the out-of-state hunter that comes for a week?

Hey Breezie........sounds like you had a great time on the Red in Lockport! Were you fishing from a boat or from shore? How long was the sturgeon? One interesting aspect about the Red, because of the great varity of species and shear numbers of fish, some level of angling success is almost guaranteed! This makes it an ideal venue for both the novice (especially children) and the seasoned veteran as well. There's nothing worse than taking a child fishing on a venue that requires a lot of skill to catch a few fish, their attention spans are short aren't they!

Hi there....

Did some fishing at lockport the last couple of weeks. My 12 year old daughter pulled in a smaller Sturgeon. Wow! We were surprised. It seems like everytime we put our line out we were getting fish. Whether it be those small catfishy types or like I said my daughter pulled in. Just a darn good time had by all. Try it!!!!!

WATER LEVELS?

Can anyone give us any indication on how high the Red has risen due too the rain she's received south of the border? Any info would be much appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Headed up north for a couple hours last Sunday night. Picked up many small fish along sharp breaks where it went from about two to 15 feet. Also had luck early in really shallow water around eddys. Didn't do much in snags or deep holes.

The lower Red continues to produce, not only numbers but big fish as well! The reason she's been so productive this year is exsessive waters flows. Lockport becomes a smorg for a multitude of birds and fish under these conditions. For example there is no less than two hundred pelicans at any one time here on the river and we all know they need a lot of fish to sustain themselves. So why does increased flow rates make this portion of the Red so productive? It's simple exsessive flows attract higher volumns of fish in off Lake Winnipeg, from the emerald shiner to the mighty catfish it's all part of the cycle.

In my opinion 2004 has to be considered as one of the best years on record and I think it's safe that many would agree with me!
