Went out Monday night for a couple hours. Couldn't find the big suckers so I had to use what we could. Six inch suckers, I would cut the back third off and use the rest hooking through the head. Fish from 6 to 9 with five fish boated, on avg. all between 22 and 24". They were all very heavy fish, stomachs were full on every one. The bite was very light with no great peels, just the light click every now and then. The bigger ones should be starting to hit more often with the warmer temps coming, at least we hope for warming weather. See you on the river.

Fishing for cats in the Fargo area continues to be steady. We are catching about 20 catfish in a 5-6 hour outing. Not great fishing but steady. A few more big fish are showing up now though. Most days we are getting fish in the teens but so far none over 20 yet this year.
The water temperature here has reached 65 today and I would expect that to go up to close to 70 if the weather is as nice as they say were going to have this week.
Most fish are coming off snags, (but I fish snags more than anything else). We are also still catching buckets of goldeyes so bait has been easy to come by. I have only been using cut up sucker and cut up goldeye, both have produced about the same for me.

What a great evening for fishing.
Almost 2 years ago, I ducked underneath a baseball hat and decided to fish this 'dirty' river called the Red River. I was tired of driving over an hour to just catch a small set of samples to throw back.
Fast forward...tonight we had five of us in the boat on the Red River. Myself, my wife, my 2+ year old daughter, my best friend and his daughter. No hiding this evening...proudly we launched the boat. We spent about 3 hours on the river. lots of nibbles...only one taker...17lbs. I'm proud to say I actually took that one!
Forgot the camera at home...but there were 4 witnesses..(Granted, my 2 year old would believe me if I said it was 97lbs...but there were witnesses:>)
Quiet night- only one other boat on the river. The bites were light...and we only used cut sucker. Actually frozen sucker from 'East Grand Station'. Yep-out of the freezer.
A fun night. A FAMILY outing.
It's good to do that now and then.

Fished at Lockport today with two other guys. Finally tally 20 cats only two under 32" (26 1/2 & 27) the rest from 37 1/2 to 32. Bait of choice was cut sucker. Fished from The Cats on the Red to the locks. Nice to see they are finally biting.

Actually Scoot, Kent got it right (although in much nicer vernacular than I would use) on the second try. I figured I didn't necessarily need to answer it right away because we all know the correct answer and that makes it a rhetorical question.
So I guess the next question is why don't we? (Sorry for another rhetorical question) I mean we're more than willing to spend 10-15 minutes complaining on web sites about the "hot topic" for the day. It only takes me 2 minutes to pour a little bleach into the livewell and strip weeds from the trailer. Of course, one should always remember to flush the livewell before putting bait in it, or you'll be fishing with skinless minnows (or bleaches as my fishing partners referred to them). Seems to me we still caught fish with them, must have been the chlorox chum. So, yes I DO make a reasonable effort to not spread aquatic exotics. And let me take this opportunity to also thank everyone else who does the same.

Answer:_They are to lazy to pull the drain plug on their boats, And they don't clean off the trailers.____________________________________

Allen,
The answer to your question is this- we all hate trivia questions where the person asking the question doesn't offer their take on what the answer is.
Seriously, I'd guess you're looking for something like- we're all in favor of having safe and productive fisheries to enjoy for many years to come. If that's what your thinking- I agree!

Allen, I know the rule will help all inland waters greatly. Maybe it should have been here long ago with whats happening in MN with the exotic plants and mussels. It doesn't take but one boater to screw up a lake.
Fish the Red last night. Ended up with four or five cats, biggest being 13lbs the rest in the 5 to 7 range. Sat in one place pretty much the whole night. Just tried to find a place out of the wind.

Awww, relax a little Kent. The rule may suck for a few ND residents, but you're just a carp caught in a net thrown for uglier fish than you. Specifically, this law was meant to protect our non-shared waters from importation of our exotic friends to the east. DL, Sak and Audubon are already known to have some exotic plants. And the potential for zebra mussels and other exotic fish species are reasonably high with live bait brought from some of Mn and Wi. I for one support this law. I'm a realist and know it is only a matter of time before we get the same exotics as Minnesota and Wisconsin, but I would prefer seeing their introduction postponed for as long as possible.
So here's one for ya Kent. What do the vast majority of Mn fishermen who come to fish in ND, and ND fishermen who fish in Mn have in common?

Let's see who's thinking along the same lines as I am.

Kent,
I'm pretty sure that Brad Dokken of the GF herald has stated that buying bait for the river is ok-for either side.
I'll check to make sure though...
On another note:
Make sure you folks know that the Wednesday Night Catfish League is at LaFave (below Cabela's) tomorrow! They won't be doing the North Landing...see todays paper.
See you guys tomorrow at LaFave!

When you guys are fishing cats, how close to the snags do you fish. Do you fish down or up stream of them. when do you fish the deeper chanells, and when might you fish the current. Any suggestions would be appreciated. also do cats school by size, or will they be all mixed together.
Thanks, Gregg

The new law the ND Game and Fish started really sucks. Its says that you are not allowed to import live bait or baitfish into the state without the proper paperwork. OK, the vendors lic. is $15.00 bucks but if you are using it for white suckers it runs $75.00. So I just got of the phone with them and they told me this. If Scheels and Home of Economy don't have any suckers you had better not buy them at Cabela's or East Grand Station if you fishing the north ramp which is ND access. This is considered importing and if caught you will be fined. So what happens if you them to freeze, are you going to have to save every sales slip to prove where yoou got them. Just wanted to give everyone a heads up on this one.
