That would be Jim Hislop. I had 3 guys on the river the last 3 days and final tally was 71 and the water is about 14 higer than normal. They have the gates out of the locks due to the rain. Fished the spillway and backeddies. Lots in the 19 and honest 20. Largest was 24.8. In Sept they are putting their winter feed on and are usually the largest. Check back prior to the 17 July. Hope they haven't put their lockjaw on then.

Canuck.

Canuck,

Thanks for answering my questions. We had our first young one and we have to come up and show him off to all the grandparents, aunts, and uncles. I hope to get out on the river at least two maybe three days while we are up there. That will be the 1st week of September. Myself and a guy I work with will be coming up the week-end of July 17th to fish. I'll check back when it gets closer. We have some nice channel cats down here on the Yahara River which flows into Lake Mendota at Madison WI. We use cut sucker and gizzard shad. We'll get 32-35 inch channels that run 15-20lbs. My wife and I fished last year up there on September 3rd. We had 16 fish from 32 to 37 inches. The 35-37 inchers had to be pushing 30 lbs. The fish you guys have up there have great condition factors (fat fat fat). Maybe it was the time of year and they were putting on the feed bags for the winter I don't know. We went out with guide Jim Hyslop? Hysop?. He's got a 17-18 foot blue alumnicraft. Good luck and take care. Talk with you later

Bradd: Lots of questions and I will try and answer them all. Right now the bait of choice is sucker. Depends on the time of year. Check on this site prior to coming up and we can tell U what they are biting on. Frogs: the northend of the campground in Selkirk is loaded with frogs, and no U can not buy frogs in any bait shop. The landing at the dam is private and he charges $6 Canadian. The launch is greatly improved this year, double cememt now.

If there is anything else just ask. I am off to the river. Fished the last two days and have one more. So far 45 cats.

Canuck.

Just wanted to throw out a couple of questions. My wife's family is from Winnipeg and I fished the Red River for the first time last year. We hired a guide last year but this year we will be coming up for two weeks in July and also in September. I will be bringing a boat along this time. Is it easy to catch goldeyes? What about goldeye versus cut sucker versus shrimp? We plan to put in at Selkirk and fish down river but if we do fish at the dam can we use the ramp at Cats on the Red and is there a fee? We fished well below the dam last year (Spetember) and did really well. Wanted to know if this area would be good through the summer or should we head to the dam? One last question - do any of the bait shops sell frogs or is there an area one can go to catch some? Thanks for any help.

Canuck....5 guys in 2 boats at the floodway mouth...that was us!!! I was in the older Lund with one other fisherman. The 3 guys that you shared the bait with were part of my group, and they certainly thank you for sharing. They had shrimp and chicken livers. I had a pail of cut sucker that we were using in my boat, but was "holding out" till the other group begged. (friendly rivalry) I never would have thought to fish as shallow as we did. Learning something new everytime out. Again, our thanks, and hope to meet you out there again soon.

Ron, U fished infront of the floodway's spillway, right. By chance did some in a Lund toss U a bag of cut up sucker??? U should have asked earler, but glad to help anytime we can. Take care and enjoy the high water. (Small world hey)

Mike...I was at Lockport on Tuesday also. Myself and 3 buddies launched from Stu's at about 7pm.,and fished till about 1am. We ended up catching 24 catfish, and lost 5 more. As you did, we found the fish quite shallow, 3.7 to 4.5 feet of water, close to shore. The largest of the bunch went 37 inches. The most successful bait was chunks of sucker, but we also caught on shrimp and chicken gizzards. Looking forward to the next trip!!!

Four of us went to Lockport on Tuesday. The water was up significantly but fishing was no problem. Stu at "Cats on the Red" says that the big cats love the high water and he expects the fishing to explode anytime now as the water stabalizes a bit. Bring good anchors and fish the edges of the river. We caught seven and lost a few others. Nothing huge this trip - biggest was 20 - smallest just under 12. Stu said he caught his biggest cat - a 37 lber - in the '93 Summer flood and said people shouldn't hesitate to come up even with the high water.

Desperate,

I think you are doing just fine. Use 2/0 to 7/0 hooks. Cut sucker should work just fine. Perhaps it's the spot you are in or possibly the time of day. Early and late are better times. Other than that....I'd just move around. Cast it out for 10-20 minutes...if nothing, move about 50 to 75 feet.

Other places to shore fish would be East Grand Forks, below Cabela's and Riverside dam.

I just moved here 3 weeks ago and am trying to catch some catfish. I have been using suckers without much luck. I don't know if it is the of the size hook I am using or if it is the size of the sucker. I have been mainly fishing between the Gateway and Demers bridges. I know most fisherman are reluctant to disperce their spots are secrets, but if anybody could tell me where to generally fish and what kind of hooks to use and how to bait them I would greatly appreciate it.

Desperate,

Went out last night from 6 to 9:30 Caught alot of nice cats on cut sucker. Alot of the pickups were slow taps turning into the good old peel and burns like in later summer. Caught five between 5 and 6 pounds and a little one about 2 pounds and three over ten. 31", 31 1/2" and a 32 1/2" scales battery was dead, but I guessing about 14 on the big one and little over eleven pounds on the 31" fish.

MnSportsFan, Playground and Fishing spot. If your looking for a place to fish and be able to see your kids at the same time I don't beleive there is a spot. As far a fishing goes you can try below Cabelas all the way to the point dam or fish by the North Landing or the North Dam, the banks aren't that steep in these areas and would be safer if kids are along. Good luck

Hey guys, is there anywhere to bring a kid fishing on the river without worrying about a steep bank or any dangerous areas in the Grand Forks area? I am really looking for a park with a good shore fishing spot and a playground near by. Just curious if anybody knew a place. Thanks for any info

Frogs seem to be working great for cats. They bite every time you cast it out. Most are about 5 lbs. but some are up to 17. We are just shore fishing.

Went out Fri evening from 6 to dark. Ended up with three nice cats, 10 1/4, 12.5 and a 14.5 lb with 5 more from 4 to 6 pounds. The bite was a little lite but some really took it. Cutbait was the key tried fresh goldeye with no luck.

Fished the last 2 days at Lockport, tally 71 cats between the two poles. Only one was under the 30" mark but the largest were 36 1/2". They are staged just below the dam. Have 3 more days on the Red.

Keep a tight line........
