Kent: If U are checking this site prior to leaving today. The goldeyes are in the doors at the locks, right up against the doors about 2 1/2' deep. All the curtains are in the dam as of about noon today so there is NO concern about debris or major flow.

I talked to couple of guys and they all said they were having poor luck with cats. That is funny because I talked to one of the guides and he had his two daughters out for about 1 1/2 hrs and they had 4. and all were master anglers.

I was just after goldeyes for bait, got my 10 in less than 30 min and one was 36 cm., the largest I have caught in a long time.

The Red river is starting to normalize. The lock master is starting to lower the dam's water control structures (3 in total now). I fished most of the night and early morning the 31st and had good luck back away from the dam/locks. It's good to finally fish the river downstream from the locks without having to fight the current. I personally find the fish are bigger in general down from the locks (and yesterday was no exception with one 40" fish). The night bite was superb, but as was mentioned you do have to go carefully. I finally got out for the night shift after having fished the river during the evening with a couple of reporters from the "National Post". I figured that fish might be a bit better later on and they didn't disappoint! I'm going to be doing the "night-shift" a little more regularly over the next two weeks. Goldeye are bit tougher to catch these days (but they are still working well) and frogs are working as well but I suspect they'll become the bait of choice if our drier weather is to continue. Don't forget the "Cats on the Red tournament". There is a posting with tournament details on the Fishing Manitoba bulletin board if you're interested. Get out there while the going's good and fish safely.

Canuck, Frogs are going in the freezer tonight, Hope cats don't mind a little freezer burn. Got my rubber boats and net already packed. Just hope I can find lockport. If I got my directions right I will be taken Highway 1 or 100 around the south end of winnipeg until I get to 101 then take that north until I get to 59, then take 59 until I get to 44, head west on 44 right into Lockport is this correct. There other guys left this morning and should be fishing by 2 this afternoon, so I should get a report up from later today.

Kent: I am not sure I don't think U can bring live frogs into Canada. I would sugguest that you freeze them because I know you can bring frozen bait into Canada. Otherwise bring a butterfly net and catch your frogs here. There is a hay field just west of the Red (the floodway) and the guy is cutting the hay right now. I personally use dead frogs and have seen a guy use frozen frogs and they work OK for them. It would be just a shame to catch all those frogs and when U show up at the border not be able to bring them across.

Fished at Lockport tonight (4 hrs) and landed 12 (2 guys fishing) and had 2 break offs. They have put in another 2 curtains with only 2 more to go..I used only frogs and found the big hogs hungry for them.

With the curtains going in the water up river is rising and causing the drift wood on the shores to come on down. The two open curtains are allowing the drift wood to come through so be careful where U anchor. There are lots of places where U don't have to worry about the drift wood

Kent and to whom ever would like to know, they have put two curtains in the dam at Lockport. The far east and far west ones are in now. This will allow you to anchor with NO problem. The goldeyes were real slow this afternoon but heard from some guys there that they caught them in the morning. I am out on the water tomorrow nite so if U are interested I can let U know how the bite was.

Kent, I personally use Berkleys Big Game high vis line in the 25 lb range. If you set your drag for your 20 lb line U shouldn't have a problem. It may take you alittle bit longer to bring the fish in but so be it. I quite often have people who aren't heavy into fishing and do not understand drags so have had to go to the 25. I have 20 lb Triple Fish on a couple of my rods and have had NO problem.

I have spent so much time lately on the water I have to catch up on the house chores but probably will be out for at least a couple of hrs. I have an 18 ft Lund (Alaskan centre consul) with a 60 hp Mercury, not fancy just a good fishin boat.

Canuck

Be heading up there Fri. after work. Hopeing to get there sometime around 9pm. If you make it out on the river this weekend look me up, I'll be in a dark blue 16' crestliner with a big (SHIMANO) sticker on the drivers side of the boat. Hopeing for good weather, and very tight lines. Hey do you think 20lb XT will work up there everyone here says to get braided line. I myself like mono in the 20lb range any bigger and you get into haven to add more weight. Whats your thought on this. Everyone says I break off more, I just tell them you have to set you drag different.

Kent: I personally use two 3 oz (6oz) for near the dam and centre channel then switch to a single 3 oz for the shallows and near the edges. Concerning anchors what I use and find very useful is a home made, it is about 18" long and 1 3/4" solid steel (some use 2 " square solid) Then I welded four blades about 9" each and tappered the ends a bit. The real trick is using enough rope. I personally use about 80 feet, yes 80 feet. If you attach a small piece of chain to your anchor it would help as well. For your info the bite is changing to frogs right now but the goldeyes are also OK.

Well fokes, I have been out on the Red a couple times now since the high water. It has been very slow. The bite is very odd. You have to really watch your bait. The biggies are just sucking on the bait, you might not even know it is there untill you reel in.

Good luck all and let us know if you find out where they are hiding, look shallow.

Fished south on Sunday afternoon. Worked alot of tree piles and a few holes. Caught three smaller cats all about 23". Lots of taps and hits but nothing there by the time we picked up the rod. When we caught a fish they hit the bait with force.

Current was still pretty fast and alot of stuff floating around so be careful.

And the landing is open! I plowed what the city didn't finish.

Please be aware of a couple of items:

1. You need to back your truck into the water to launch...that means your passenger is going to get their feet wet.

2. There is a large rock or something about 15 feet into the water and toward the south...be careful when loading and unloading.

3. The city may still be there in the morning to finish the 'loop' (I only plowed the launch area.

4. If you catch the state record, throw it back...it's mine this year! :>)

Ok guys...the landing is 1/2 done-they plan on doing more this afternoon, and if they don't get it all done today, the city plans on being down there on Saturday morning.

The mud is nearly 12" thick where they stopped earlier this morning, so I'm afraid that my mini-snow/mud plow won't be able to finish the job.

Stay tuned because they will be calling me to let me know how it's coming down there.

Looks like the boats will be able to go out this weekend. Good luck everyone...and stay safe...and release the big ones.

Scott

Well the river has almost hit it's level at the North Lnading that you can put a boat in...

I'll call Streets tomorrow morning to get them to plow and scrape the landing so it will be available Friday Evening.

If they DON'T do it...I'll do it myself. I have a plow that I use to scrape the landing.

I might need some help if I get stuck...anyone willing to be at the North Landing at 5 PM to help pull me out if I get stuck...

Bring your boat!

Scott

Dennis, the North ramp is actually usable for the past couple of days. The nice thing about the river height these past few months is that the pressure has been at a min. and the cat tourny should bring out the piggies for sure. My buddy and i caught a keeper just last night. Topped out my 20# scale no prob. it was caught on cutbait. Good luck everyone.

Catfishing in the Fargo area is about as steady as the water level has been in Grand Forks. Up and down, Up and down, for the most part it has been up though. The river here has stayed within its bank and is actually getting a little low again.

We are catching big fish (10lbs+) everyday now with a lot of eaters (2-4 lbs). Most fish are coming on cutbait and shrimp. The best cutbait has been Goldeyes, Suckers, and Bullhead. Yes, Bullhead makes very good cutbait and it freezes well.

We do not catch as many big fish as the guys do up by Lockport but we do have a blast catching the cats that we have here.

How has the fishing been in Grand Forks? Is the North access useable?

Good Cattin!

Dennis

Canuck,

I'm from Dodgeville, Wisconsin USA. We're in the southwest portion of the state. My wife's family is from Winnipeg. Her grandparents, aunts and uncles still live up there. I'll be up the first week of September and don't have a place for the boat. I can leave it at her aunts farm but its way down on at Morris. We did pretty well on the 19th and 20th.

Bradd: Give Stu McKay a call at Cats on the Red at (204)757-9876. I believe poeple have left their boats there before.

Question: Bradd, where are U from I get confused with your address on your post, but I am easily confused.

The Cats are changing their pattern of bait right now. They seem to be interested in frogs even though they are not migrating yet. The goldeyes aren't around in mass but the cats are nibbling on them. Only 9 today but all were in the 20 lb range. Had to work hard as I did not have frogs. A couple of guys had frogs and had better success. Make sure if you are crossing the border the frogs are dead (frozen) or you will not be able to bring them into Canada. The frogs at Selkirk Park are very small right now.

Fished the 19th and 20th between Selkirk and Lockport. River was up and a little muddy but was easily fishable. Didn't mess with the dam, too much current and too much boat traffic. It was like a circus. Caught fish where ever there was flooded grass and willows with medium to fast current. We were casting right next to the dry land, somtimes we would hit the willows or grass and have to drag it into the water. Frog tipped with sucker worked great. We had 44 fish with two boats. Had a great time. I'll be up in September again can't wait. Good luck to all.

Jason, sorry I didn't get back to U sooner. If you are puttin in at Cats on the Red have a look at Stu's rental boats anchors. They are home made, 1 3/4 solid steel about 18" with four pieces of flat steel (3/8 to 1/4) about 9" long with a slight bend.

How do U get to Lockport? well, Take Hwy 59 north to Hwy. 44 (about 15 miles north of Wpg) then west on Hwy 44 about 3 miles until you cross the bridge and take your first left turn for one block then left to the T intersection ,turn left about 1/4 mile (under the bridge) to Cats On The Red. Once on the river fish below the dam about 100 yds (my favorite side is the east bank) Other areas are the north edge where the spillway enters the Red. Look for other boats fishing and anchor close by (be courteous about the distance though) and better yet ask anybody once U get there.

Bait of choice still seems to be suckers. The goldeyes are alittle harder to get right now compared to last week.
