Ya, we were up North too this weekend, kinda slow, yup-yup.

We had fun, even with the slow bite we managed to learn new ground and a few new methods.

The wind changed N to S and the water dropped fast, but that will and can change back to a good bite just as fast. Bada-Bing-Bada-Boom piggy time!

Now I guess I can hunt puddy tats again close to home, and a few walleye too, tell the next trip up yonder.

Stu, that new ramp is darn nice, money very well spent that's for sure!

Ah...And Stu...wasn't it 3 T-Shirts.... and not two?

I think we may need to re-nagotiate over a cup of your coffee..next time..Eh?

Fished Saturday about the same times as Kent with about the same story. We ended up with three cats, 5#, about 16", and 17# (35"). The bite is slowing so not much time left to get out.

Fishing is going to start slowing down a little, the water temp was at 55.4. We fished four hours and ended up with a 17 inch walleye and three cats. One good eater, and two other about 7 to 8 lbs and the other about 11-12 pounds. Hopeing to get down a couple more times before the cats shut off for good.

Fished Selkirk Saturday and Sunday morning. It was a bust, only three walleyes and 4 sauger. Slowest I have had fishing there. I heard Friday wasn't much better, but Thursday was good. Tournament there on Sunday with pre-fishing Saturday, participants catching a few but were not doing very well.

J.K.

The city of Selkirk has "not" fixed the north side boat ramp. I'm sure that they'll get around too it soon, it's only been in need of repair now for seventeen years,(give or take one or two). Rebuilding ramps is a costy undertaking. I know fisrt hand, it cost me a small fortune to replace mine. On the hand, it was money well spent!

About the weather, so far we had five or six hard frosts in as many days. The water temp. has dropped fifteen degrees in the last two weeks. It is now around fifty three degrees.

More 'eyes showing up as the water temp. drops. There has been a few trophies, but not many so far. Hopefully the big hawgs will soon start appearing in greater numbers.

Regards,

Stu

I don't know how you people feel about nonresidents. But we get are fare share in S.D. All I know is people are very friendly when were up there fishing. I was wandering if the red is above full or not and if they have fixed the boat ramp on the north side at the park in selkirk. Has the weather beeen cool or not. Have you had any frost yet. We do not keep any fish when were there. We are looking for those big eyes 14 to 16 pounders in the river system.

Hey JK,

Just received a report on traverse bay and it was slow today. I've got some guest staying with me from Ill, they fished out there today and said it was very slow. As October approaches things will or at least should improve out there. Your best bet is too just keep making inquiries from time to time.

Regards,

Stu

Is there anybody starting to fish traverse bay by pine falls yet? A few of us nonresidentents are planning a trip up there to fish walleyes. We have fished the red the last five years. We have heard at times the bay is very good for walleyes in the fall.

I am for new regulations on slots for the Red River.

The slot for channel catfish should be no harvest larger then 26", but 24" would be fine with me too.

I would also like to see the 1 over 28" walleye dropped from the spring conservation season. Plus add a 1 over 28” only slot for walleye all year long on the whole system.

To promote and protect the future of this fishery and its unique trophy potential we must protect them at their most vulnerable times, in my opinion.

Eddy, we were just jigging using 3/8 oz jigs tipped with salted minnows. Use the usual fall colors orange , pink , yellows. We did not use cranks at all and after fishing the Red for many years I find the best results with jigs. The bite was from 7:30 am to 10:00 am after that it was just dead. I have a few friends heading out tomorrow and will advise how they do. Hope this helps.

Was out on the Red on Sunday Sept 22. The fishing was excellent , stopped counting the sauger at 34 and the total tally for greenbacks was 12. Also lost a big one right at the boat , estimated the lenght at 28 inches very fat and green oh well. All fish were caught in 12 1/2 feet of water and they were hitting on various colors. Yahoo for the fall run.

After a severe bout with a cold on top of my fall allergies..I am out tomorrow for some fishing.

I'm thinking I'll be catching ...oh...maybe 13 or 14 lb Walleyes and probably some 40 to 50 lb Cats.

I'll be posting photos of these monsters after me and my niece get back.

Hey, guys...take a kid out fishing...you won't regret it.

The fall bite is on. A couple of us went out last night after work for about three hours. The cats were smacking everything. At one point we had a triple on. (Hard work for two people to work three cats at once.) I think the fall bite is here and I hope to be right in the middle of it.

Thanks for the update Stu. I am so glad that the eyes are starting to bite. What is the water like after the spill , I read in the paper that you are supposed to wear gloves if going fishing. That makes me kinda nervous to venture out on the red this weekend. The spill is a disaster for all fisherman. Do you feel the river is safe to fish if not when will it be. Like I said before I am very nervous due to the spill....Again keep me posted thanks.

Eh...by the way Stu...the cats are going nuts here too.

Been fun working jigs and frogs, they "THUMP" them hard like a hungry pike.

It is fun watching the cats at night chase the frogs and jigs right up onto the shore to hit them, like teasing a cat with a ball of yarn EH.

:)

God I love fall!

Great news on the spill being stoped Stu!

Lets hope they lean from this and get the system set so no more leaks EVER happen again.

The Red is a tough girl, she will outlive us all, if we treat her well.

See ya soon.

Latest on the trials and tibulations of the Red!

As of approximately 5:00 am this morning, they stopped the flow of sewage from entering into the Red. ( Prayers answered)! Lets see what type of penalty will be handed out too the city for this outrageous and incompetent act! I only hope that the powers too be act in the best interest of this incrible resource. There has too be a strong,clear message sent that this type of negligence will not and cannot be tolerated. No exceptions please!

On a more positive note: (fishing update) Fished for 'eyes late this afternoon from 5:30 til 7:50 pm. There were two of us and together we managed eight walleye, twelve sauger and three large kitties. All fish were taken on 3/8 oz. orange jigs tipped with a salty. We fished just north of channel marker 38. Depth was twelve feet. In a nutshell, the event that has just taken place hasn't seemed to have any negative effect, (thus far)!

Another foot note: The cats are absolutely nuts! I mean they are spanking any kind of quality cutbait such as goldeye or tulibee. We're finding them in shallow aswell as deep water. One angler claims to have caught seventeen cats on corks near the eastside rock pile below the dam. He claims that he was only there less than an hour before his bait (goldeye) was depleted.

Til next time,

Stu

Hey Walleye Slayer,

As we all know by now, the Red is facing a potential disaster. I don't want too push any panic buttons at this time for the simple reason we don't know if it will have "any" impact on the resource....... At this time, all I can report with respects to the fall run is that one of the Reds regulars caught five Walleye yesterday. The largest was 25"'s. He was fishing in proximity of channel marker #38. As a matter of interest, he's back out there as I'm preparing this mail. I will attempt to contact him when he comes off the water in order that I may get a report from him. I will then post his results.

Regards,

Stu.

Raw sewage dumped into Red River

~Canadian Press~

Tuesday, September 17, 2002

A huge flow of raw sewage has been released into the Red River after an accident at a treatment plant in Winnipeg.

A problem with a valve caused the sewage leak and city crews are working around the clock to correct the problem.

The sewage started flowing into the river late Monday afternoon.

But city officials say it could take a week to fix the leak.

Until then, up to 230,000 cubic metres of raw sewage will be flowing into the river each day.

Biologists fear the sewage may hurt fish and aquatic life from the Red River to the north end of Lake Winnipeg.

But Winnipeg director of the city's water and waste department, said a high flow upstream will help dilute the sewage.

No communities downstream of Winnipeg get their drinking water from the Red River.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
They better get a plug in it soon and not let it pump crap into the system for a whole *** week!
Thanks for the info Stu. I was out on the Red on Sept 15. Worked the river from Selkirk park all the way to Netley. Fished at various spots but all we caught was drum and bull heads. The water was very murky. I am hoping to head out again this Friday and with any luck the water should have settled down by then. Please keep me posted on any info regarding green backs , depth , time of day etc etc.....Thanks again...
Red river water temp yesterday was 66 degrees (19 celsius) a touch too warm for greenbacks. Water levels are not too much off normal, maybe a wee bit higher than what we expect for this time of year (see http://www.gov.mb.ca/natres/watres/river_report.html) Water levels and the release of water over the past while may have put the walleye bite off...or so some speculate. Drum, bullhead, channels and sauger are biting throughout the day. The walleye that have been caught seem to have been encountered further down river in the Netley creek area. With a few more cooler nights and some northwesterlies the bite should pick up soon.
Fished Friday night and Sunday morning. The fish are interested but not taking the baits with authority. We only caught about five between both days. Seems to be just like Cats Incredible. I noticed that the water levels are still falling at about the same rate as they were at that time. If this is any indication the fishing will really pick up by the weekend.
