The cats are turning on. Fished from 6:40PM til 8:10 last nite myself and boated 5 cats from 37" to 32" ranging from 20.5 to 14.7lbs. Cut sucker seems to be the bait right now. Fished right out front of Cats on the Red at Lockport.

Two guys at Lockport got the catch of their life yesterday. After 2 hrs landed a 6'4" sturgeon. It took them from the locks to north of the Fort.

I took my wife to the North Landing on Saturday to do some shore fishing. We just wanted to get out and spend some time together. She caught a few goldeyes to keep for later use and a couple of stone cats.

I want to make it known that I was almost embarrased to take my wife down to the North Landing. What a dump. What do people from other areas think when they go there. I think it is about time people take some pride in what the river has to offer or EGF will beat us to the punch in the tourism game.

I think Scott is doing a fine job of pushing the issue with the city and would like to offer any assistance that I can.

Saturday night...slow-but we got a nice 11lb 8oz cat. The bite was very light. Cut sucker was the only bait we had...and we ran out.

The evening was made 'exciting' by the fact we were being shot at by some guy(s). Hearing bullets richochet around us was pretty unnerving. The Sheriff had a nice little chat with them... I wouldn't have been so bothered, except for hearing the bullets actually richochet near us.

The North Landing was full on Saturday night...about 12 vehicles...lots of boats and shore fishermen.

A little windy...but a great out!

Well, today I was on the radio. I made it a point to bring attention to the North Landing in Grand Forks.

I've done my best to keep political issues off this website and keep them in the 'debatable issues' area....

Now I'd like some help from all you readers from Canada to Wahpeton:

I would like to request that you write a letter to the editor of the Grand Forks Herald. I would like for you to focus on the fact that the Red River is underestimated in it's potential impact on our economy. I am championing this cause, guys and gals....and I need some support.

A letter of support to the editor of the Grand Forks Herald is all I ask-you can them here:

letters@gfherald.com

I'll keep harping on this issue....you guys and gals write letters of support and it will be a 'done deal'

Thanks guys.

We had a strong North wind on Monday and an even stronger one from the south today. This changing winds will break the ice up quicker. I would suggest the greenbacks will be there for at least the weekend. I hope to get out on Thurs but will be there for sure on Friday, and if U are interested I will pass it on.

From all reports cats on the Red was slower Saturday and Sunday. Met "Manitoba Angler" monday night at a local tackle shop and he confirmed the bite to be slow and he saw fish much smaller than normal being caught. Many Manitoban lakes like Lake Winnipeg are still under ice or are just opening up. I was lucky this weekend and didn't venture out on a lake that was half ice covered.... the wind shifted and the ice moved across the whole lake...I could have still been there! With regards to the question about how long the eyes will stay in the river.... for the most part they'll be there until the ice breaks on the big lake. The bite will be slow but your best bet will be in those spots where there is a discharge of warmer water in the river eg. Netley or other small creeks which dump into the river. Larger live minnows jigged slowly have been key for me in the past for boating a few more eyes.

How long do the GREENBACKS stay in the Red River by End of Main this time of year?  I was up there in early Oct. and released a 10.2 oz walleye and would like to try it again.

Fished the Red yesterday. Tried the Greenbacks (Walleyes) in the morning and ended up with 6 in the boat (3 of us) ranging from 8.3 to 3.4 lbs in the morning, at the End of Main. The eyes seem to be waiting for the ice to go off the lake. They were all spawned out. In the evening fished for cats at Lockport and boated 3 ranging from 18.1 to 16.3 in just 1 1/2. The cats seem to be turning on alittle better. If anybody is planning on coming up suggest U bring your own cut bait as the goldeyes are still not biting.

Went to look at the North Boat ramp Sunday. I can't beleive the road is that bad. Does anyone know who maintains that road? Its getting torn up and getting harder and harder to pull a boat down it without the boat taking a beating.

Fishing for catfish in the Fargo area continues, for the most part, to be good. With the exception of last night, we have been catching fish where ever we drop the anchor. Last night though, I struggled to catch just a few fish and caught nothing bigger than 3 lbs. Today was back to usual and catching fish everywhere again.

Had a 13 year old boy catch a cat over 15lbs today. Boy was he excited! It is more fun to see a young angler like that catch a big fish than it is to catch one yourself.

Goldeyes are also easy pickin's in the Fargo area as we filled a 5 gallon bucket in about an hour with 3 of us fishing. They can be a blast to catch when you get into a large school like we were into today.

The water temperature is still in the upper 40's. Expect the fishing to just explode when we get a few warm days and the water temp moves upward.

Good Cattin!

Fished the Red at Lockport yesterday. The bite was slow until about 4:30 PM then picked up real good. There is no goldeyes around so if U are coming bring your own cut bait if possible.

The real news is the walleyes are stacked up at the end of Main waiting for the ice to go off the lake. One boat netted 23 with only 1 under 21". In 14' water with a jig tipped with a salted minnow. Headed there tomorrow.

The Red may be low but there is LOTS of water. The ramp at Lockport (Cats on the Red) is excellent, new this year and double with cement. No problems even for cars. The cats seem to be holding between the floodway and the locks.
