Josh,

Fishing the river can be tricky. You have to use the right set that is key. What I use depends on my bait but in general it is a two piece set up with a hook on a leader (12 inch) tied about a foot from the end of your line. Then at the end of the line tie a on your sinker. What I have found works best is medium suckers either cut in half or belly cut (this is to allow for scent). Frogs also have been productive. good luck

Hey, I am new to the area, and looking for a place(s) to fish around Grand Forks. I am from the Twin Cities of Minnesota, so I'm used to fishing both rivers and lakes. I have tried the Red River and Red Lake River, but with not much luck. I've heard about the English Coulee being a possibility perch and pike, but I don't know about where to go, or if that's true. I'll take any and all suggestions, thanks.

I noticed there wasn't a selection from Lake Ilo. I went there last Sunday, Aug 17, early in the morning before it got hot. I caught a 10lb. Northern, an 8lb. northern and several 5 pounders. They were biting on dare devils, nightcrawlers and minnows. Beautiful lake, not any traffic. It was a good day fishing!

We fished dry lake the first day and a half, then went to miller lake on the 23rd and 24th of March, a good combination of perch, northern, and walleye on dry lake. Miller lake was good perch fishing, everyone pretty much had there limit in perch, had 24 northern, and a couple nice walleyes.

Allen, On the East side there is a sign that says no motorized watercraft. I'm sure some were vandalized but why would they put that sign up unless they allowed access on that side? If anyone knows who to contact it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the northern info!

I've heard someone also stole a house off the pond and a friend is questioning someone aboout it. I'll keep my ears open. I'm sure its the same people.

The tourney on golden costs $20-$25 for 2 holes and $5 for each additional hole if I remember right. The grand prize I think is an Ice House. Its to benefit the Mayville football team. I just got a tip that if you head straight out from the store and to the south a little ways in the middle theres a 16-18 ft hole with some bigger fish hangin out. I don't know if its true but its worth a shot. I fished the first turney and did very well on gold Genzworms tipped with 2 Waxies. If you don't catch more than 50 little perch your chances will be slim to win. If you catch a couple lb walleye or huge perch your chances are good because the people won on 75+ 7-9 in. perch. Good luck.

DumbHick, My vote would be to try something large like a smelt on a tipup for the northerns. Anything smaller than that and you will have trouble keeping the perch off. Also, another hint is that if you are perch fishing and they stop for more than 30 seconds, you can be reasonably certain a pike is swimming by. So hurry and drop something down that he might be interested in like a large minnow.

My comment on the Sheriff? Well, he may be a nice fellow and all, but the last time I came in from the east (two summers ago) there were signs that clearly stated no driving on the dike and the fine is $10,000 (actually, there were also signs at the gate that stated "no vehicles beyond this point"). My guess is that the Sheriff is reluctant to write the ticket for such a steep fine and to me that makes lack of enforcement part of the problem for I have seen a county officer talk to people with their vehicles on top of the dike, but given they parted ways shortly thereafter I assume no ticket was issued. If the signs have been vandalized or stolen, they should be replaced with more durable markers. I believe when I came in from the west during December there was still a sign there designating the "only" legal place to drive over the dike. Maybe i should drive in from the east sometime this week to see if these signs no longer exist.

So what is it then when coming to nice spot to fish? I have always driven over the dike, never actually driven on it to get to a spot. I thought it was OK to come in from the east (by the sheriffs place) and then take the approach that leads up and over the dike, then turn left or right to your pond of choice.

Scott - got any info on this?

I said nothing about the sherriff being the problem. All I said was I know of an access site were you wont spin your tires, but I don't know if its legal. Sorry about the confusion. More info on how to catch those northerns would be appreciated.

Fishin'. I fished North Golden Lake about 4-5 weeks ago and I didn't even get a bite. I jigged about 12 holes all over the south end. But I have caught fish there in the summer and caught perch, pike and many many bullheads. There is supposed to be bluegill in there but I have never caught any. I may have to try it again maybe late afternoon.

I would agree but we need to take the access topic up with someone who can do something. Anyone have any ideas? I also heard the bass fishing is good also. So it sould be a great little recreation are someday. Then again if access was better, more people would fish the diversion and thus the fishing pressure would be greater. Good Luck.

I have heard there are plans to chain all access to the Coulee. Only way in would be to walk in. What really frosts my bobber is when I see trucks and 4 wheelers up there, this gives the naysayers a reason to "punish" everyone. The only track(its not a trail) is right at the base of the dike, so when the guys with the big mudders rut up a trail, people move over some making the trail wider, that makes a big place for erosion right at the base of the dike. I would like to see some trails for access to the area out in the flats. That would get the traffic away from the dike. Also would like a crossing right at the dam.

BumbHick,

I personally have seen lots of 2-5 lb pike come out of hte Coulee, but nothing bigger than that in either the summer or winter.

So far as driving over the dike? So you are telling us that the Sheriff is part of the problem? That dike needs the grass on it to maintain its structural integrity. When people drive on it, they remove the grass with their spinning of the tires. The rule is this: No Driving over any part of the dike except where posted as allowable on the west side.

Your tax dollars, and mine, built the dike. Do you go around shooting signs too? This is the same principle even if you are an otherwise well intentioned individual.

Tightline and wuddy are right, if anyone wants good fishing for perch the diversion is the way to go. A short drive and a sure bite, you can't beet it. The best thing about it is if one pond is slow you can move to another. My question is I've been hearing about big northerns in the summer, but nothing in the winter. Has anyone tried a tip-up with a chunk of smelt? I always plan to set one up but a guy usually doesn't have time to put one up and check on it! My hint is "the smaller the pond the better." Check it out. As far as access, instead of trying to climb the dike or walking over it, follow it to the right and passed the sherriff shooting range untill you get to a low spot in the dike. Its a slight hill up and then down but I've made it in 2WD all year. I don't know whats legal or not out there, but I've heard the sherriff is pretty nice if you do mess up.

I just love it when I go to the Coulee and hear someone say "there are no fish here", or "the Coulee is on the way out, "there are nothing but little perch there". Don't go there. I love what the Coulee represents. I don't waste a tank of gas going to Devils Lake, I can go there for a couple of hours, AND catch a lot of EATABLE size perch. What is wrong with that. I may have a chance to catch larger fish at Dl, not everyone brings in the lunkers every time.

Dangerous ice conditions have developed on Golden Lake in Steele County. In the last day, at least 6 houses have fallen through the ice and there could be up to 10. There is currently open water near shore on the south end of the lake. Be careful, no vehicular travel is advised until colder weather firms up the ice.

cvikes80, The junction of countyy roads 6 and 13 are where you will want to turn south. It is 9 miles west of the railroad tracks in Merrifield, or 4 miles east of county road 3 (the one that goes north to Emerado). County road 13 is gravel, go south on it about 1/2 mile and you should see the trail to the east that will take you up and over the dike.

Congrats to Scott on the addition to the household. Maybe we should try and get you an honorary medical license.

The English Coulee most commonly referenced is the English Coulee Diversion project a few miles NW of Thompson. The way I always go there is to take Merrifield Road (no exit from I-29) west to the junction of Cty rds 6 and 13(???), turn south and go about 1/2 mile, look for the dirt trail heading back east and follow that until you hit water. You'll find perch, northerns, and LM bass in there.

Of course the English Coulee itself runs through Grand Forks and you will find kids fishing northerns out of it where it winds through UND's campus and near the bridge at 6th Ave N, if you go on the north side of town in the spring you may get lucky and find saugers in it come late spring, and of course the obligatory catfish and bullheads.

Couple of side notes: The perch at the Diversion tend to have little black parasites in the filets during the summer and they tend to go away some in the winter (not harmful to humans from what my bio friends tell me, but unappetizing to me), the catfish/bullheads I've caught in the Coulee on the north side of town tended to have nasty looking open sores (could the garbage/oil in the water have anything to do with this???), the saugers I've seen and the pike have all looked O.K. so I'm thinking they are short term visitors.

Made my first ever trip to the coulee today. After cutting a few holes and poking around I ended up catching a few small perch on minnow heads and wax worms. Seems like a pretty cool place to wet a line that is close to home.

Has anyone been up to golden lake? I don't know where to find any fish. I am new to the area and just want to get out after some pan fish. Any help would be great.

Take it easy Dr. Fish. No need to get hostile. Just enjoy yourself and don't worry about what you "think" others are doing. Keep them lines tight.

Dr. Fish, I never said I kept every fish I caught. I released quite a few. 14 perch is hardly a bucketfull. Remember 35 is the limit. That doesn't mean I am going to catch or keep 35.

Well I Fished the Coulee on Sat. from about 10am-2:30pm and I didn't catch anything. Quite a few guys came and left while I was there. No one was hitting the perch too hard. So I left and came back about 3:45 and fished until about 5:00 in the same hole I started and kept 14 nice size perch. Had great fun.

How come no one is reporting anything lately? Is it because of the warm weather?? How's the ice doing in the southeastern part of the state??

In regards to Key Lake, I highly doubt there is anything there. A group of us tried it last year and though we tried all over, we never marked a fish or had a bite. We accessed it through the gate off of the road in the Northeast corner. The landowner came out to see how we did and was a very pleasant guy. He said that some of his neighbors had caught fish out of it (Northerns). When we were there we saw a bit of activity (old holes) but nothing that looked like it had been used for any length of time (no blood, scales or dead minnows). If there are any in there, I'm guessing the numbers are sparse.

Allen, I did email Terry Steinwand, Chief of the Fisheries Division with NDGF, this particular concern. I am awaiting his reply. It may be that the G&F has an access agreement with the landowner for a specific "lake entry" point. Thanks again..... outdrznd@aol.com

You're welcome OutdrzND. Just remember that this can be a very contentious issue even between the landowners and the state and I would still check with NDGF on this particular body of water. Just because "Allen from GF" says this is the general way the law gets interpreted won't mean much if the landowner calls the sheriff and he comes up with a different interpretation. It's kind of like the "you can go unarmed onto posted lands to retrieve fallen game" rule. You may not get busted for a hunting/fishing violation, but there are trespass issues that may still apply.
