Pounded the Jumbo's on Sunday on the south arm of Stump. Not far East of Hwy #1. Shrimp on a bubblegum Jig was the ticket. Ice has about an inch of water on it making it extremly slippery. Must have fallen a dozen times trying to chase down my "still flopping" pile of perch.

Went to Stump on Saturday. Heck of a wind coming from the west, made it impossible to find shelter. Must have punched 35 holes along the north side. Never even seen a fish on the vexilar.

Ventured to Stump for some of that fantastic perch fishing that I have been hearing about. I zig zaged the whole lake drilling a whole about every 50 yards to get a reading on the Vexilar. I finally left after 4 hours and about 50 holes without finding as much as a fish on the screen.

I talked to a couple other people who did almost the same thing I did and hadn't found the fish either.

I also spoke to the creel survey guy who told me that the lake has been hit and miss. I know there are fish in that lake but they won the game of hide and seek Saturday.

No Fish, No secret spot really. We were about 150-200 yards south-south east of the north exit. So, yes we came in on county road number 4. I think were in about 27 ft of water (not too sure since my friend had the vex and I didn't care once my jig found the bottom and I immediately caught a fish). Be careful coming in that way, there were several 2 inch wide cracks that had water in them. I really do believe we were just lucky though and wouldn't be a bit surprised if those fish were gone when we left. I got the vex for the last 10 minutes and didn't hardly see a fish, so i was convinced they were a mobile school instead of holding to structure.

Allen, Any hints on where to fish??????? Not trying to get your secret spot or anything, just a general area. Are you accessing the lake from #4, from the east? Thanks for any info.

Scott, Was that you dragging the sled around the north side of Stump in the late afternoon? A friend and I stopped off at Stump on our way home from DL on Saturday afternoon. We hit the ice on Stump at about 2:45 and wow was my southern friend nervous when the water squirted up through a crevasse when we drove over. I kinda squirmed a little also, so we stopped immediately when I felt we were far enough away from the cracks. There were about 6 vehicles on the lake and two left via the southern exit just as we showed up. Anyway, we found some holes that had been drilled earlier that day (about 1/2 inch of ice in them) and kicked them open. It was non-stop action for about an hour and a half. A couple local farmers that had been out there most of the day drilling holes stopped over and joined us after a few minutes saying they hadn't caught squat all day either. We ended up with 39 keepers (9-12 inches) and probably threw back twice as many (must have caught ten 3.5 inch perch myself). This was a perfect example of hit or miss fishing. We just got lucky and dropped in on top of a school of active fish and they wore us out for 90 minutes before they almost completely shut down.

Fished Stump Lake Saturday. Nothing.

We walked almost 3 miles around the lake, varied depths-12 to 30 feet-never even marked a fish. Poked holes all over.

Very odd compared to the past. 4 vehicles on the lake-they were moving great distances also...obviously looking for fish...gone before 5 pm.

Larger cracks and pressure ridges. Ice was nearly 24" thick everywhere we drilled.

Oh well...

Fished the west side of Stump near the island that the geese used to sit on back in the hayday (80's). Fished about 15 feet of water and absolutely pounded the jumbo's. You could not get the lure to the bottom for 3 hours. They wouldn't touch a minnow or a wax worm! Store bought shrimp is the way to go. It's a bit more $$ but well worth it!

Anybody tried Stump in the last few days? I've heard mixed reports coming form the big lake but nothing concrete. Some say they are catching a few nice fish, others are saying that they are getting skunked. Has anybody really gave it a good effort and punched holes all over the lake in an effort to track these big perch down? Or is everybody simply fishing where County road #4 hits the water? Lets get some reports going here......

I've been reading some of the reports on Ice fishing Devils Lake and Stump Lake, by golly i hate to say it but you guys aren't trying hard enough, punch lots of holes drop your vexilars in and don't set up until your flasher is jumping wild. I fish twice a week meaning weekends and limit out on perch and walleye. I caught 2 walleyes over 10lbs and the other three average out to be 4lbs. So quit crying around and hit her hard.

Hit Stump this weekend. Fished all over the lake for two days and ended up with nothing. Lake must be fished out. Even put the camera to work and only spotted two 4 inch perch. Not worth going!

Well since I visited three lakes today, this report will be on all three lakes!

Started at Lake Laretta, nothing. Didn't mark any fish. In fact it seemed as though the entire lake was nearly empty for this time of year. Even the darkhouses were empty...

Decided to travel to Stump Lake, as I arrived, there were three cars/trucks leaving, (almost half the 'population'), the first vehicle claimed that the perch had moved and there were none to be found....

Onto another lake.

Now, when you are this close to Devils Lake, the temptation is to travel the last few miles to go to this lake, but alas...I decided to travel east and south to the famous north Golden lake.

Drilled 4 holes, barely put the line in the water before I had a perch. Waited about an Hour before the next hit..it was a northern. I had 2 lb. test line, without a leader, and a tiny hook. but I fought that northern for a good long time. I lost him below the hole. I didn't realize he was that close. The knot for my slipbobber had slid down the line, and I thought the know was the neutral zone, so to speak. I never did get bitten off. Just lost him at the bottom of the hole. Because Golden lake is so clear, I was able to estimate the length of about 24-26".

I had a blast reeeling in that northern, but to bad I lost him. waited about another hour for perch to come in...very sporadic.

At almost exactly sundown, they hit with a vengance. Only one line was necessary.

I had a bit of a problem getting off the lake....I had left my lights on, drained battery...dead battery. no jumper cables!

A couple of guys helped jump start my vehicle...and made sure a couple of 'chevy helping ford' jokes went with it..

I appreciated the help, and through it all, Golden Lake was the winner in fish, fun and North Dakota human kindness.

Is anyone fishing this lake anymore? I was there this past Saturday for a couple hours and caught nothing. I did mark several fish on my Vexilar but could not get them to hit. Seems like this lake is doing the same thing as last year when it was really good to start the season but then died off.

Rick,

The other access that I am aware of and know how to get to (besides the one you describe) is to take the County Road 4 turnoff which a person can get to on Hwy 1. Once a person is on this road they will be heading west and will go around a "road closed" sign and then the road will turn to the south and the lake will be right there. I know some people are getting on from the south on the same road but I am unsure as to how a person gets there from the south. Good luck.
